Studying at Humboldt-Universität is usually a full-time programme. However, circumstances may arise that prevent you from completing the full study programme. In this case, you can choose part-time enrolment, i.e. attend fewer courses per semester and thus extend the full-time study programme. If you are looking for part-time degree programmes or distance learning courses, i.e. a degree programme that you can complete in the evenings, at weekends or flexibly from home, we recommend that you research [www.hochschulkompass.de](https://www.hochschulkompass.de/).

## Frequently asked questions
### In which degree programmes is part-time possible?
In principle, any degree programme at Humboldt-Universität can be studied part-time. However, please note the following exceptions:
- Degree programmes whose [study regulations](https://gremien.hu-berlin.de/de/amb/?selectedType=Studienordnung) explicitly exclude part-time study. This applies to some Master's degree programmes. Part-time enrolment is possible at HU for all degree programmes leading to a **first** degree (Bachelor, Diplom, Staatsexamen). The same applies to the Master of Education, although the student counselling services should be consulted beforehand.
- Part-time study is excluded for double degree programmes and doctoral programmes.
### What does part-time study mean?
During part-time enrolment, you will complete fewer courses/examinations per semester and thus extend the duration of your studies. The periods of study completed during part-time study will be credited to the standard period of study in accordance with the proportion of time you apply for. The study and examination regulations for your degree programme apply in full.
Part-time students have the same status at the university as full-time students. Fees and contributions must also be paid in full.
### When/how can I apply for a part-time study programme?
The application (see above) to study part-time must be submitted to the [Enrolment Office](https://www.hu-berlin.de/en/study/service/enrolment-office).
### What should you bear in mind when deciding to study part-time?
- You should clarify **in advance** any possible effects on areas outside the university and on benefits that are claimed from non-university institutions. This includes, for example, BAföG, scholarships, orphan's or half-orphan's pension, child benefit, health insurance, tax matters, entitlement to accommodation in student halls of residence, residence permit, etc.
- If necessary, contact the relevant offices for clarification.
- Many degree programmes at HU start in the winter semester. This means that courses may only be offered once a year. In addition, many subjects recommend a certain course of study, which should be adhered to as far as possible for academic reasons. Humboldt-Universität endeavours to take the special needs of part-time students into account in the organisation of studies. However, it cannot offer any additional courses.
- **Before** making your decision, it is best to clarify with the relevant student advisory service how you can organise your studies under your specific personal conditions.
