Frequently asked questions

I have transferred the fees for re-registration, but I can neither validate my Campus Card nor print the certificate of enrolment. What is the reason for this?

If you still see that you have not been re-registered after paying your re-registration fees (please note the bank terms) in the AGNES portal, please check whether

I don't need the semester ticket in the coming semester. Can I cancel it?

The use of the semester ticket is mandatory. Only the following groups of people are entitled to exemption from the semester ticket:

  1. Students who do not exercise their membership rights at the HU (main student body at another university in Berlin or Brandenburg).
  2. Severely disabled persons who are entitled to free transport and can prove this.
  3. Students who can prove with a medical certificate that they are unable to use public transport due to a disability or illness.
  4. Students who spend at least three months outside the fare zone (Germany) due to their studies, an internship semester, a semester abroad or as part of their final thesis.

If one of the above reasons applies to you, you can submit an informal application for exemption from the semester ticket with appropriate proof of the reason to the Enrolment Office by the end of the main re-registration period (by post or electronically via the e-mail contact form at https://hu.berlin/kontakt).

Once your application has been approved, you will see the reduced re-registration fee on AGNES(https://agnes.hu-berlin.de) after logging in under "Re-registration information". If you have already paid a higher amount, you can submit an informal application for a refund to the Enrolment Office, stating your account details (also possible by e-mail). Please note that the refund transfer can take up to 10 weeks.

A retroactive exemption/refund is not possible. The date of receipt of the application and any necessary updating of the Campus Card are decisive. The application for exemption from the semester ticket must be received in full by the Enrolment Office by the end of the main re-registration period of the respective semester for students who are re-registering; for students who are enrolling, by the date of enrolment.

In the following cases, students have no entitlement and are excluded from using the semester ticket:

  1. Students who are on a semester leave of absence.
  2. Students on distance learning programmes (currently only M.A. LIS).

I will complete my studies by the end of the semester or have already submitted my thesis. Do I still have to re-register?

Please contact the relevant examination office and clarify whether re-registration is necessary in your case. Since failure to re-register will result in de-registration and, depending on the number of semesters already completed, re-enrolment on the same degree programme is generally not possible, you should consider this decision very carefully.

I have submitted my dissertation. The defence may take place in the coming semester. Do I have to re-register for the coming semester?

Please enquire at your faculty's doctoral office whether enrolment is necessary for the defence and proceed accordingly. If the standard processing time for your doctorate has expired, you have submitted your thesis and enrolment is necessary in the coming semester, please ask the doctoral office to confirm this informally to the enrolment office. We will re-register you once we have received this confirmation from the Doctoral Studies Office and the semester fee has been paid on time.

I would like to change my degree programme. Do I have to re-register or can I pay the semester fee during the enrolment process?

If you are sure that you would like to remain enrolled at the HU in any case (with the old or new subject), please re-register.

If you want to leave the HU in case of a rejection for the new subject, please do not re-register. You will then be exmatriculated at the end of the semester (31 March/30 September).

Alternatively, you can apply for de-registration if, for example, you need the de-registration certificate for another university before the end of the semester. If you do not re-register, you will receive a request to transfer the semester fee during the enrolment process if you are admitted to the new university.

I have deregistered and have been de-registered. Can the semester fee be refunded to me?

In the event of exmatriculation after re-registration has been completed, a pro rata refund of the semester fee may be possible after returning your Campus Card. So that this can be checked for your individual case, please submit an informal application for a refund to the Enrolment Office and enclose your Campus Card with your application. Please note that retroactive refunds are generally excluded.
