## General information on project tutorials

Project tutorials are student-organised courses at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in which students work on topics of their own choice in an academic, practical and interdisciplinary manner. They plan methods, objectives and forms of work independently and organise a course that deliberately differs from traditional seminars. Project tutorials create scope for new perspectives, critical questions and experimental learning formats.\
\
Leading a project tutorial is linked to a contract as a **freelancer** for one semester. Participation and teaching are open to students from many disciplines and promote independent work, teamwork and project-orientated learning.

- **Who can apply for a project tutorial?** HU **Bachelor's students from 60 CP and 3rd/4th semester,** HU **Master's** students, students of regulated degree programs (e.g. Law, Protestant Theology) from 60 CP

**There are no examinations**; credit points are awarded for participation, preparation/follow-up and, if applicable, special working task(s). A project tutorial does not serve the preparation of a final thesis or doctoral thesis.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a project tutorial?

A project tutorial is a course planned and led by students that deals independently with scientific and practice-orientated issues. It is a space for new teaching methods, interdisciplinary approaches and self-organised work.

### What must an application contain?

### Application text (no more than 6 pages)

- Description of the scientific topic and problem (and its interdisciplinary suitability)
- Objectives and possible outcomes (or their form of presentation)
- Motivation of the applicants to offer a PT and explanation of the suitability of the topic for a PT
- Which forms of learning and working in groups and which (scientific) methods should be applied (tried out, developed)?
- Target audience/participation (also: how will students from different disciplines be involved and addressed)
- Brief summary of the project (summary in a few sentences)

If possible, the title and brief summary should also be provided in German.\

Please include the title of your planned project tutorial and your name(s) in the application text. No further personal details should be included on the pages of the application text.

### Attachments

- (Preliminary) schedule and work plan with key topics
- Bibliography (separate from the schedule and work plan)
- Expert opinion/review (1 page) on the topic of the PT by a HU scientist (the scientist should be the supervisor for the PT)
- Application cover sheet (see below):
  - Contact address(es)/telephone number(s), name(s), address of the applicant, faculty and institute, date and signature(s) of the applicant(s)
  - Confirmation from supervisor/reviewer (HU scientist)
  - Approval of the dean or dean of studies of the faculty and the director of the institute --> this refers to the faculty to which the supervisor/reviewer belongs!
- Personal documentation: Certificate of study (Studienbescheinigung)
- Bachelor's students must also provide proof that they have earned at least 60 credit points in their studies by means of a transcript of records
- We recommend obtaining confirmation from the faculty or institute regarding support (rooms, equipment, etc.)
- Consent to publication (see below)\

### How many credit points can be awarded?

The number of credit points to be earned is at your discretion and that of your project tutorial supervisor. It depends on the workload. The basis for 1 credit point is 25 to 30 hours. In addition to attendance time, the time required for preparation and follow-up should also be taken into account. Usually, between 2 and 5 credit points are awarded for most PT.\

The Arbeitsgruppe Projekttutorien recommends estimating the average workload and providing participants with written confirmation of the recommended credit points at the end of the semester. This must be signed by the PT supervisor and submitted by the students to the examination board responsible for their subject. The recognition and crediting of credit points for the project tutorial is the responsibility of the respective examination board and should be clarified in advance if necessary.

### Are there exams in the PT?

No. There are no **examinations**. Credit points are awarded based on attendance, preparation and follow-up work, and the agreed special working tasks.

### Can two students lead a project tutorial together?

Yes, but **only 40 hours per month** can be allocated per project tutorial. However, these can be divided between **two people, with 20 hours per month** each.

### How does an extension work?

An extension for a further semester is possible. It must be well justified and applied for by the deadline. If demand is high, new applications will be prioritised.\
The following documents must be submitted for an extension application:

- Substantive explanation of why an extension is being requested.
- (Provisional) schedule and work plan with key topics for both semesters.
- Bibliography. This must be separate from the schedule and work plan.
- Expert opinion/review (1 page) from the PT supervisor regarding the extension request.
- Application cover sheet (see below):
  - Contact address(es)/phone number(s), name(s), address of the applicant, faculty and institute, date, and signature(s) of the applicant
  - Confirmation from supervisor/reviewer (HU scientist)
  - Approval of the dean or dean of studies of the faculty and the director of the institute --> this refers to the faculty to which the reviewer belongs!
- Personal proof: Certificate of study
- Ideally, you will have confirmation from the faculty or institute that support will continue to be provided (rooms, equipment, etc.).
- Consent to publication (see below)

### Are external parties allowed to participate?

Yes, interested persons without HU student status can participate if they register as guest or **secondary auditors**. Charité students can also apply for secondary auditing status.

### Can a PT take place in English?

Yes, an English-language project tutorial is possible. The application can also be submitted in English, but should include a short summary in German.

### Who can supervise a PT?

A scientist who is employed by HU during the PT period.

### Can doctoral students offer a project tutorial?

No. Doctoral students and students on continuing education programs are excluded.

### What does the expert opinion/review look like?

The report is informal (1-2 pages) and justifies the professional suitability and relevance of the topic as well as its realisation within the framework of a project tutorial.
