Financial Aid Displacement Advisory

\ Financial aid displacement happens when a student’s aid is reduced or otherwise adjusted because the student received funding from an outside organization or for other reasons listed below. This practice is permitted in Texas and may change eligibility or award amounts. Texas A&M University offers guidance to help students maximize financial aid and prepare if financial aid displacement occurs. Students may contact Aggie One Stop for help understanding changes and ways to reduce the chance of displacement. \ \ Common reasons a student's state-funded gift aid may be adjusted:

• Additional gift aid was received from a private source that pushed the student’s total gift aid over the student’s financial need or cost of attendance.
• Reduced cost of attendance because the student may have dropped classes,  changed housing status, or withdrawn from the institution, among other causes.
• Failure to meet satisfactory academic progress requirements or other merit-based criteria for the student’s gift aid.
• A change in enrollment status that renders the student ineligible for certain gift aid programs.
• Failure to complete required administrative processes or submit documentation by established deadlines.
• The student’s Student Aid Index changed due to verification, updates, and/or corrections to the student’s financial aid application, which impacts the student’s eligibility for some forms of gift aid or the amount of aid awarded.

How Do I Apply for Gift Aid at Texas A&M University?

Gift aid is financial assistance that does not need to be repaid. To maximize gift aid opportunities, students should complete both a financial aid application and a scholarship application.

When Can I Apply for Gift Aid at Texas A&M University?

Students can apply for gift aid year-round. For the best chance at limited funds, we recommend submitting a financial aid application by the priority date.

When Can I Expect to Receive a Gift Aid offer at Texas A&M University?

• Newfreshmenadmitted for the fallsemester:offers typically begin in early February.

• Newfreshmenadmitted for the springsemester:offers typically begin in November.

• Transfer students admitted for thefallsemester:offers typically begin in April.

• Transfer students admitted for the springsemester:offers typically begin in November.

• Continuing students after the first year:offers are typically made by July 1.

Students should review the Financial Aid Portal in Howdy regularly for updates and complete any outstanding financial aid requirements.

What if I receive Gift Aid from an Outside Source While Attending Texas A&M University?

If a student receives any type of award, such as scholarships or corporate sponsorships, from a source other than Texas A&M, it must be reported to Scholarships & Financial Aid as soon as possible. The aid offer may be adjusted to meet the guidelines of the aid program rules. If funds have already been disbursed and the student is no longer eligible, the student may be required to repay financial assistance from those aid programs. When possible, Texas A&M  always tries to reduce self-help aid, such as loans or work-study, before reducing any other gift aid.  \  \ To report an award from an outside source, complete the Report Outside Scholarships and Resources form in the Financial Aid Portal:

• Log in to Howdy

• In the search bar, type 'Financial Aid Portal,' and follow the link to the portal

• In the left menu, select the academic year in the dropdown menu

• Click the Status page

• Under To Do List, follow the instructions for Report Outside Scholarships and Resources

This form can be completed as many times as necessary to report new outside awards and resources.

What Are Some Steps I Can Take to Minimize Financial Aid Displacement?

• If an outside scholarship or other resource reduces other financial aid offers, the student may consider asking the scholarship donor about deferring the scholarship to a future academic year when fewer scholarships are expected to be awarded. Deferrals are at the donor’s discretion and are not always possible.
