# Regents' Scholars Program

First awarded in fall 2004, the Regents' Scholarship helps first-generation college students achieve their educational goals at Texas A&M University. \
\

### Award Amounts

Students entering fall of 2020 or later can receive up to $6000 per year for up to four years.\
\

### Initial Eligibility

To be considered for the Regents’ Scholarship, you must:

- Be considered a Texas resident
- Be admitted as a freshman to Texas A&M University College Station, including the McAllen Higher Education Center, Engineering Academy at Blinn Bryan or Engineering Academy at Galveston.
- Be a first-generation college student (neither parent has earned a bachelor’s degree).
- Come from a family with a total income of less than $50,000 per year as verified through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid ([FAFSA](https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa)) or the Texas Application for Student Financial Aid ([TASFA](https://aggie.tamu.edu/financial-aid/apply-for-aid/tasfa)).
- Live on campus the entire first year, unless a special circumstance housing appeal is approved. Required for students at the College Station and Galveston campuses only.

### Program Requirements for Continued Eligibility

Once you have been awarded the Regents’ Scholarship, you must meet all of the following requirements each academic year to continue to receive the award:

- **Satisfy the participation requirements** of the [Regents’ Scholarship Program](https://studentsuccess.tamu.edu/routh-first-gen-center/for-students/regents-scholars-program) through the [Office for Student Success](https://studentsuccess.tamu.edu/routh-first-gen-center).
- **Demonstrate financial need** as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid ([FAFSA](https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa)) or the Texas Application for Student Financial Aid ([TASFA](https://aggie.tamu.edu/financial-aid/apply-for-aid/tasfa)). You must submit the FAFSA or TASFA each year to verify your eligibility.
- **Enroll full-time.** Eligibility varies based on [Enrollment Status](https://aggie.tamu.edu/registration-and-records/classes/enrollment-status-definitions). For details, please visit the [Award Proration](https://aggie.tamu.edu/financial-aid/apply-for-aid/processing-your-aid/award-proration) information page.
- **Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress** ([SAP](https://aggie.tamu.edu/financial-aid/apply-for-aid/maintaining-eligibility)). Meet Texas A&M's SAP standards each semester.
- **Meet the 30/60/90 hour rule.** You are required to have earned 30 hours by the end of your first academic year, 60 hours by the end of your second academic year, and 90 hours by the end of your third academic year. An academic year includes the fall, spring, and summer terms. Hours earned via transfer credit, dual credit, and AP/IB testing can be used to meet the 30/60/90 rule.

### Duration

The scholarship is a four-year award as long as all requirements are met, including Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP), meeting the 30/60/90 hour rule each academic year, continuing full-time enrollment, and completing the Regents’ Scholarship Program requirements.\

### Application

You should complete your FAFSA or TASFA as soon as possible, or by February 15 at the latest to ensure it will be processed by Texas A&M in time for the February 15 priority deadline. To determine if you might be eligible to receive one of these scholarships, please see the FAQ below. \

**Note:** This program is limited to approximately 850 students each year. These scholarships are offered on a first-come, first-served basis as students have completed their financial aid application, turned in all requested documentation and our office has verified eligibility.\

### Participation Requirements

Participate in the Regents’ Scholars Program through the Routh First-Generation Center in the [Office for Student Success](http://studentsuccess.tamu.edu/Routh-First-Generation-Center/Campus-Coordination/Regents-Scholars-Program).

### Maintaining Eligibility after the first year

- Complete the [FAFSA](http://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa) or [TASFA](https://aggie.tamu.edu/financial-aid/apply-for-aid/tasfa) and continue to possess financial need as defined by the Department of Education.
- Continue to enroll full-time.
- Meet Satisfactory Academic Progress ([SAP](https://aggie.tamu.edu/financial-aid/apply-for-aid/maintaining-eligibility)) as defined by Scholarships & Financial Aid, and
- Earn the appropriate hours to meet 30/60/90 hour rule.
- Living on campus their entire first year for students at the College Station and Galveston campus unless a special circumstance housing appeal is approved.

## Regents' Scholarship Program FAQ

## [What is first-generation?](#a-whatisfirst-generation-kXEupY)

First-generation is classified as neither parent have earned a bachelor’s degree. Parents may have earned an associate’s degree, have taken college courses, or be in the process of taking college courses.

## [How do I apply and when is the deadline for the application?](#a-howdoiapplyandwhenisthedeadlinefortheapplication-Lvf9gZ)

The Regents' Scholarship will be offered to approximately 1,000 incoming freshman students each fall. There is not a separate application process for this scholarship. However, you must have your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA) on file by February 15, and your Texas A&M financial aid file must be complete by May 1. Initial awards are based on data from your admissions application. To apply for admissions, you must complete the [Common App](https://www.commonapp.org/) or [Apply Texas](https://www.applytexas.org/) by December 1 of the prior year, for fall admission. ## [When will I know if I receive the scholarship?](#a-whenwilliknowifireceivethescholarship-CdfkIw)

You will be notified of your Regents' Scholarship offer when you are offered financial aid. Financial aid awarding will begin in the spring. You must complete the [FAFSA](http://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa) or [TASFA](https://aggie.tamu.edu/financial-aid/apply-for-aid/tasfa) before you can be awarded the Regents' Scholarship. At the latest, your FAFSA or TASFA must be completed by February 15 so that Scholarships & Financial Aid may verify your total family income. Your financial aid file must be complete by May 1.

## [When do I need to complete the FAFSA or TASFA?](#a-whendoineedtocompletethefafsaortasfa-HqZooQ)

We recommend that you complete the [FAFSA](http://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa) or [TASFA](https://aggie.tamu.edu/financial-aid/apply-for-aid/tasfa) as soon as possible once the application becomes available. You must submit your FAFSA by February 15 to meet the priority deadline.

## [How long after I complete my FAFSA or TASFA will I have confirmation of my Regents' Scholarship?](#a-howlongaftericompletemyfafsaortasfawillihaveconfirmationofmyregentsscholarship-qhSnZW)

Financial aid awarding will begin by March. You will receive confirmation of your scholarship on your offer letter or financial aid portal if:

- You have been accepted to Texas A&M University
- You completed the financial aid process associated with the [FAFSA](http://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa) or [TASFA](https://aggie.tamu.edu/financial-aid/apply-for-aid/tasfa)
- We confirmed eligibility based upon your family income.

## [What if I do not qualify after completing the FAFSA?](#a-whatifidonotqualifyaftercompletingthefafsa--B4uLm)

If you do not qualify for the Regents' Scholarship, you will be considered for other types of financial assistance.

## [What if I do not qualify because I have too much financial aid/scholarships my first year at Texas A&M?](#a-whatifidonotqualifybecauseihavetoomuchfinancialaidscholarshipsmyfirstyearattexasaampm-WlDtN9)

If you exceed your cost of attendance or financial need due to scholarships and/or the Federal Pell Grant, your Regents' Scholarship may be reduced or eliminated that year. If your Regents' Scholarship is cancelled during your first year, you will not be eligible to receive the scholarship in future years. All outside resources and scholarships must be reported to Texas A&M University. To report an outside scholarship, you should submit the Report Outside Scholarships and Resources form available at [Howdy](http://howdy.tamu.edu/). Click the Financial Aid Portal icon.

## [What if I lose eligibility after my first year?](#a-whatifiloseeligibilityaftermyfirstyear-WlDtN9)

If you become ineligible and your scholarship has been cancelled due to enrollment, need, or satisfactory academic progress please email [regentsscholarship@tamu.edu](mailto:regentsscholarship@tamu.edu). Your scholarship may be reviewed for reinstatement once you are meeting program requirements.\

Reminder: You must maintain all program requirements, regardless of the amount received.

## [Am I eligible for this scholarship if I am a non-resident student?](#a-amieligibleforthisscholarshipifiamanon-residentstudent-3FFNqd)

Non-resident students are not eligible for the Regents' Scholarship. Your must be [classified as a Texas Resident](https://aggie.tamu.edu/billing-and-payments/residency-for-in-state-tuition/establishing-residency).

Yes, students qualifying as a Texas resident through the [High School Graduation in Texas provision](https://aggie.tamu.edu/billing-and-payments/residency-for-in-state-tuition/establishing-residency) are eligible to receive the Regents' Scholarship. You must complete the Texas Application for State Financial Aid ([TASFA](https://aggie.tamu.edu/financial-aid/apply-for-aid/tasfa)).

## [Am I eligible for this scholarship if I am an International student?](#a-amieligibleforthisscholarshipifiamaninternationalstudent-OF9y5H)

International students are not eligible for the Regents' Scholarship. You must be [classified as a Texas resident](https://aggie.tamu.edu/billing-and-payments/residency-for-in-state-tuition/establishing-residency).

## [Am I eligible for this scholarship if I am a Provisional Admit student?](#a-amieligibleforthisscholarshipifiamaprovisionaladmitstudent-vHB2ia)

Aggie Gateway to Success students are eligible once they have successfully completed the provisional requirements. Blinn TEAM students and Engineering at Blinn-Bryan students are eligible for the Regents' Scholarship. Students enrolled in the Engineering Academies are not eligible.

## [Am I eligible for this scholarship if I am attend a campus other than Texas A&M University in College Station?](#a-amieligibleforthisscholarshipifiamattendacampusotherthantexasaampmuniversityincollegestation-IYJ-Xa)

Degree-seeking students enrolled at:

- Texas A&M University in College Station,
- Texas A&M Health Science Center campus in College Station,
- Higher Education Center at McAllen,
- Engineering Academy at Texas A&M University at Galveston,
- Texas A&M Engineering at Blinn, or
- Blinn TEAM students are eligible for the Regents’ Scholarship.

## [Am I required to live on campus my first year?](#a-amirequiredtoliveoncampusmyfirstyear-4V8bhF)

Regents’ scholars are required to live on campus their entire first year for students at the College Station and Galveston campus unless a special circumstance housing appeal is approved. Please [apply for housing](https://reslife.tamu.edu) as soon as possible.  If housing is full, please apply for the wait list as Regents’ Scholars are guaranteed on campus housing. A spot will be assigned to you based on your Regents’ scholar’s status.

## Renewing Your Scholarship

## [What additional requirements must I meet to maintain my scholarship during my freshman year?](#a-whatadditionalrequirementsmustimeettomaintainmyscholarshipduringmyfreshmanyear-dIz-KV)

Regents' Scholarship recipients are members of the Regents' Scholars Program through the [Office for Student Success](https://studentsuccess.tamu.edu/routh-first-gen-center). As a member of the program, you are required to live on-campus, participate in a Texas A&M University Success Program (determined by your college)\*, attend a Regents' Scholars Orientation, and the Regents' Scholars Spring Reception. In order to receive the scholarship, Residence Life must receive your application for on-campus housing no later than May 1. You are encouraged to complete your housing application as soon as possible. For more information on Residence Life, please visit [reslife.tamu.edu](http://reslife.tamu.edu/).

\**Recipients of the Greater Texas Foundation Scholarship or Century Scholarship will be placed in a First Year Experience course by the Office of Student Success.*

## [What are the requirements to retain eligibility from year to year?](#a-whataretherequirementstoretaineligibilityfromyeartoyear-AJobUF)

You must establish eligibility your first year of attendance (live on-campus, participate in an Academic Success Program, attend the required orientation meeting and attend the required spring reception), continue to possess financial need – as defined by the Department of Education, and meet Scholarships & Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress and complete 30 hours before your second year, 60 hours before your third year, and 90 hours before your fourth year to continue to receive the award yearly. You must participate in all required programming through the [Office for Student Success](https://studentsuccess.tamu.edu/routh-first-gen-center).

## [What is the 30/60/90 hour rule?](#a-whatisthe306090hourrule-oIvnDj)

To meet the 30/60/90 hour rule, you are required to have earned 30 hours by the end of your first academic year, 60 hours by the end of your second academic year, and 90 hours by the end of your third academic year. An academic year includes the fall, spring, and summer terms. Hours earned via transfer credit, dual credit, and AP/IB testing may be used to meet the 30/60/90 rule.

## [What if I attend classes in the summer?](#a-whatifiattendclassesinthesummer-hCUZWD)

The Regents' Scholarship will only be awarded for fall and spring semesters. However, if you participate in a cooperative education program or required internship during the fall or spring semesters, you may request the scholarship to be deferred to the subsequent summer semester by emailing [**regentsscholarship@tamu.edu**](mailto:regentsscholarship@tamu.edu). Summer hours can count toward the total number of hours to meet the 30/60/90 hour rule.

## [If I do not meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP), can I continue to receive the scholarship?](#a-ifidonotmeetsatisfactoryacademicprogresssapcanicontinuetoreceivethescholarship-CBj1Ky)

You must meet [SAP](https://aggie.tamu.edu/financial-aid/apply-for-aid/maintaining-eligibility). If you are no longer meeting SAP, your scholarship may be cancelled. However, you may request an appointment with your financial aid advisor to appeal the loss of aid eligibility, including the Regents’ Scholarship.

## [What is Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)?](#a-whatissatisfactoryacademicprogresssap-9YRMBB)

[Satisfactory Academic Progress](https://aggie.tamu.edu/financial-aid/apply-for-aid/maintaining-eligibility) (SAP) is defined as consistently passing 75 percent of the credit hours you register for at Texas A&M and maintaining a 2.0 GPR. If you do not complete this percentage of hours and/or maintain a 2.0 GPR, you will be considered ineligible for additional financial aid until the percentage completed reaches 75% or the GPR is raised above a 2.0. When determining SAP, we will include courses that have been excluded under the grade exclusion policy in the completion rate. The courses will count just as a NG (No Grade) or W (Withdrawal) count.

## [Will Q-dropping a class affect my eligibility for this scholarship?](#a-willq-droppingaclassaffectmyeligibilityforthisscholarship-Ha6f8Y)

Q-dropping a class will only have an impact on your scholarship if you do not successfully complete at least 75% of your coursework and continue to meet the [30/60/90 rule](https://aggie.tamu.edu/financial-aid/types-of-aid/scholarships/maintaining-eligibility). ## [Can my scholarship be reinstated if I withdraw from Texas A&M and return?](#a-canmyscholarshipbereinstatedifiwithdrawfromtexasaampmandreturn-WlDtN9)

If you return during your cohort (four years from your first semester), the Regents’ scholarship can be reinstated if you are meeting all program requirements. Please be sure to reach out to the [Office of Student Success](https://studentsuccess.tamu.edu/routh-first-gen-center) for information regarding participation requirements.

## [Will I be able to receive the Regents' Scholarship in my graduating semester if I am taking less than 12 hours?](#a-willibeabletoreceivetheregentsscholarshipinmygraduatingsemesterifiamtakinglessthan12hours-sITYnE)

Students may receive the Regents’ Scholarship in their graduating semester even if they are taking less than 12 hours. To get the Regents’ Scholarship forced onto your account, you must apply for graduation ([graduation.tamu.edu](http://graduation.tamu.edu/)) and the diploma fee must be on your bill before the scholarship will be forced. Any future term payments will be forfeited.

## [Will I remain eligible in the future if my total family income is greater than $50,000?](#a-williremaineligibleinthefutureifmytotalfamilyincomeisgreaterthan50000-i8z1nu)

Yes, once you are eligible for this scholarship in your first year you will remain eligible, even if your total family income increases in the future years; however, you must still maintain financial need, as defined by the Department of Education.
