The Indiana Council for Economic Education (ICEE) is the PK-12 academic outreach center for the Department of Agricultural Economics at Purdue University. The ICEE was established in 1954 and has a national reputation for excellence and leadership in economic education. ICEE is affiliated with the National Council for Economic Education.
ICEE was founded to help prepare K-12 students to become active citizens and productive members of our economy by providing them with the ability to make sound economic decisions.

Resources
Students will be required throughout their lives to make economic decisions that are important for their own well-being and to understand and make decisions about public policy issues. A thorough understanding of economics will contribute to their personal success and the successes of the businesses, institutions, and governments in which they participate. Smart Indiana Stock Market Simulation
The Smart Indiana Stock Market Programs offer engaging and practical competitions that promote students' academic success in key subjects while deepening their knowledge of economics, personal finance, and investing. These programs are part of the ICEE Smart Indiana Personal Finance Project, supported by a grant from the Indiana Secretary of State's office.
The Fall and Spring Simulations offer a traditional simulation experience, where students manage investment portfolios over a ten-week period, starting with a fictitious $100,000. This allows them to compare their portfolio performance with their peers across the state and region. These programs are mainly utilized in grades 4 through 12.
Through participation, students will:
- Experience real-world investing and learn how our economic system works
- Develop critical academic and 21st Century Readiness Skills
- Apply and advance their math, reading, and writing skills
- Strengthen their computer and internet skills
- Work together and make decisions in teams
The ICEE has presented the Stock Market Game in Indiana since 1989, with hundreds of thousands of students participating over the years. The Indiana Stock Market Game introduces students to financial decision-making concepts, particularly those involving saving and investing. By monitoring their portfolios in real-time, students get excited about learning and applying their knowledge. Student teams can see how their portfolio performs compared to other teams around the state.
Research studies have shown that students who participate in the game have higher scores in economics and math compared to their peers who do not play the game. Teachers also find the program to be an excellent tool for incorporating financial decision-making into the classroom, reinforcing skills learned in math, language arts, and other subjects.
Personal Finance Challenge
The National Personal Finance Challenge (NPFC) is a nationwide competition that provides high school students the opportunity to build and demonstrate their knowledge of money management. Teams showcase their expertise in earning income, spending, saving, managing credit, investing, and managing risk.
How It Works:
- State Competitions:
- Form teams of 3-4 students from the same school or organization.
- Prepare your students by teaching the six core knowledge areas of personal finance and taking a practice test.
- Register yourself as a teacher and create your teams. Download unique access codes for each student.
- Compete in a state-level 30-question, rapid-fire exam on the Finance Challenge website.

This engaging and motivating team experience starts at the state level, with the winning team advancing to the National Finals.

National Finals:
- The winning team from each state moves on to the National Finals
- Teams will prepare a financial plan for a detailed fictitious family scenario, applying their knowledge from the six core areas of personal finance.

Students will have two hours to prepare and present their recommendations in a PowerPoint or Google Slide presentation to a panel of judges. Presentations last 20 minutes, followed by a 5-minute Q&A session with the judges.
- There is no fee for teachers/coaches or students to participate.
- There is no limit to the number of teams that can register, making NPFC a great class activity.
- The National Finals include a Critical Thinking Round where teams present solutions to judges, providing an excellent opportunity for students to apply their financial knowledge in a practical setting.

Teacher Workshops and Development
ICEE helps K-12 teachers and youth educators teach economics and personal finance by providing engaging workshops and resource materials aligned to academic standards. A focus on educators leverages economics and financial education because a trained and enthused teacher has a positive impact on new groups of students year after year throughout their careers.
