Goals and Aspirations
Explore College and Career Interests Together
Spend time researching colleges, and explore majors that align with your student’s interests and potential career paths. Encourage your student to seek out jobs and activities that align with their future goals.
Test Readiness
Get Involved in Test Preparation
Review the SAT/ACT test dates and seek out free resources like Khan Academy’s Official Digital SAT Prep. Use practice tests and schedule study sessions to ensure your student is ready. If able, your student should take the SAT or ACT in the spring of their junior year at the latest in preparation for the Nov. 1 Early Action deadline that encompasses scholarship consideration.
Study Skills
Foster Strong Academic Habits
Support your student by helping them create a study schedule and checking in regularly to keep them on track. Preparing for college begins with taking the most rigorous high school courses available to a student, and some families may also explore other options, such as classes at a local community college or university.
Extracurricular Impact
Encourage Involvement in Extracurricular Activities
Support your student in exploring extracurricular activities that align with their interests. Experiences that showcase leadership, community service and personal interests contribute to a well-rounded profile and may also strengthen their college applications.
Timelines
Stay on Top of College Application Deadlines
Create a timeline for college application deadlines and ensure your student is aware of important dates for applications, scholarships and financial aid. If possible, your student should apply by the Nov. 1 Early Action deadline in the fall of their final year of high school. Admission is more competitive when applying later.
