Attending your lectures and tutorials is important – these are some of the most valuable learning opportunities during your time at University. Learn what to expect, and what is expected of you.
Why go to lectures?
Attending your lectures is important – you learn a lot just by being there and listening actively. Lecturers can present material that is not readily available elsewhere and can direct you to other texts or data sources. Some content is only available in class and can not be presented in the lecture recordings or downloadable handouts.
Get the most out of lectures
- Prepare beforehand (familiarise yourself with recommended readings or relevant texts).
- Listen actively during your lecture (question/think about the ideas you are hearing).
- Ask questions during the lecture if you need clarification.
- Take good notes.
- Review your notes regularly (within 24 hours if possible).
- File your notes so you can easily find them later.
Do you get distracted easily?
If so, sit at the front. Try to look for areas of interest or main points. Focus on the material rather than the presentation.

Tutorials
Tutorials provide one of the best ways that you can learn. \ They are designed to help you develop analytical skills and effective ways of processing information. The format of tutorials may vary according to the tutor, subject and students in the group.
Students should be aware of tutors’ expectations and should, in turn, have expectations of their tutors and tutorial groups.
Why go to tutorials?
Tutorials can help you clarify lecture materials. Tutors commonly review lecture material and readings for increased understanding. Tutorials provide a chance for you to meet other students, and are an opportunity to exchange resources with other students. You can get assistance with your essays and assignments from your tutor.
Get the most out of your tutorials
- Attend regularly.
- Be prepared by doing the assigned readings, etc.
- Ask questions if there is anything you do not understand.
- Take part in discussions.
- Listen actively and attentively.

- You will be prepared for tutorials.
