HomeLeadership in research and academia: Development opportunities

The journey to becoming an effective leader begins with self-reflection and personal leadership. Excellent leaders seek to continually enhance their abilities to guide and lead themselves and others. This involves acquiring foundational skills through online training and workshops, followed by practical application and refinement on the job.

Being a leader in research and academia requires much of the same knowledge and skill set as in many other professional environments, such as effective communication, emotional intelligence, and conflict management. In academia there is the additional leadership skill of being able to build a supportive research culture promoting open, inclusive, interdisciplinary, and collaborative ways of working and leading.

While new deans, associate deans, and directors of research centers benefit from 1:1 coaching through Organisational Development, the university also offer broader academic leadership development opportunities. These can be explored below and through the Researcher Development events calendar linked to in the top banner.
