Programme overview

New Zealand’s demand for Engineering professionals continues to grow with the sector’s needs. After consulting with industry partners, we’ve identified a need for capacity and capability-building amongst Engineering graduates to meet the growing demand for engineers in New Zealand. The MProfEng will help graduates develop well-rounded skills so they can make a positive contribution to employers and society upon leaving university.

The MProfEng programme is designed to meet the requirements of the Washington Accord, the global standard for accredited Engineering degrees. This will provide graduates with a pathway towards Chartered Professional Engineers (or similar), and will also support our graduates’ global mobility as professional engineers.\ \ If your existing degree does not have the Washington Accord accreditation and you want to progress your career to become a chartered engineer, apply for MProfEng degree – because the MProfEng is accredited and gives you the option to progress to become Chartered Engineer after graduating.

However, if your existing Bachelors degree is Washington Accord accredited, you can apply for the Master of Civil Engineering as the most appropriate next step in your education. This is because the MCivilEng is more appropriate for people who already have a Washington Accord bachelors degree.

Accreditation status: *Provisional accreditation against the Washington Accord Awarded by Engineering New Zealand July 2024. Full accreditation expected in 2026.\ \ *

Programme structure

The MProfEng will be offered with 180-point and 240-point options, and will allow for full- and part-time study options. Students with three-year Bachelors degrees, such as a three-year BE(Civil), will complete a 240-point MProfEng. Students who have already completed a four-year BE degree which is (typically) not Washington Accord accredited will complete a 180-point MProfEng.

Students enrolling in the 240-point full-time option will be able to commence in Semester One each year, and will be expected to complete the programme in two years. Students enrolling in the 180-point programme will be able to commence in Semester Two, and will normally complete their programme in a period of 18 months. Part-time options are also available over multiple years.

A highlight of the degree is a double semester 30-point Professional Capstone course at NZQA Level 9. This is an integrated design experience requiring multi-disciplinary knowledge where students work in teams of approximately eight. Students also complete a 30-point individual research project.

Completion of the MProfEng means students will be eligible to apply for entry to doctoral study after they complete the MProfEng.

You'll also need to meet other requirements, including time limits and total points limits. See Postgraduate enrolment.
