Preserving oral traditions for the future.
AMPS was established in the Anthropology Department of the University of Auckland in 1970, by Bruce Biggs, with [Mervyn McLean](https://www.auckland.ac.nz/en/news/2022/07/18/preserving-the-unique-sounds-of-aotearoa.html) the first director.
The archive grew rapidly through the research activities of the department, resulting in a collection that spans from 1910 through to the present day and includes recordings of vocal and instrumental music, oral histories, stories and language resources from Aotearoa New Zealand and across the Pacific.
