## Welcoming new staff
### Vice Chancellor's Pōwhiri
The Vice-Chancellor’s Pōwhiri is a unique opportunity to be formally welcomed to the University. The ceremony takes place at the Waipapa Marae where staff will experience the culture and history of the Waipapa Taumata Rau.

### Silk Road: onboarding process
SilkRoad is the University’s onboarding process for new staff appointments. The process is designed to provide a tailored welcome experience to staff and reduce the time taken to get up to speed.

Staff have access to software for both their personal computer ‘work-at-home’ (WAH) computers or a University-owned computer. These are available either via the ‘Software Centre’ portal or by request.
Options include:

### Te reo Māori
Staff might like to become familiar with some of the commonly used words in the Māori language.
**Kuputaka** is a glossary of Te Reo Māori terms. **Te Aka**, the Māori dictionary, can help you with with pronunciation.

The **Te Kūaha** mobile app provides you with an introduction to basic te reo and Māori protocol, including a template to write your **pepeha** – a form of introducing yourself in te reo.

## Developing your teaching
### Academic Career Advancement Programme (ACAP)
ACAP is designed to prepare doctoral candidates for a career in academia. Through a series of seminars, candidates explore key aspects of academic life, build interdisciplinary relationships with academics across the University, and have a head start in the academic job market. Candidates are subject to a competitive selection process where priority is given to mid-phase doctoral students who have completed their provisional goals. Tuition is funded by the Academic Career Advancement Award.

### Teaching Well: Foundations of Learning and Teaching
Teaching Well: Foundations of Learning and Teaching (formerly Teaching Catalyst) is designed to support new teachers by providing them with key principles of effective university teaching and learning. It covers strategies for good course design, effective assessment approaches, and techniques to engage students in learning.
The new format offers a flexible, modular approach, delivered in-person over a two-day intensive period.

### Peer review of teaching
To support an application for continuation and promotion, there is an expectation that all academic staff will have their teaching formally observed at least once in the first two years at the University, and that all teachers engage in regular informal observation of colleagues and have their own teaching observed throughout their career.
