##### 1. PURPOSE

The purpose of these guidelines is to support the administration of the Highly Cited Paper Award (the award).

##### 2. SCOPE
#####
1. These guidelines apply to the Highly Cited Paper that has been highly cited (i.e., 500 citations, not including self-citations) according to Scopus.
2. These guidelines apply to all KFUPM faculty members and researchers.

##### 4. OBJECTIVES
#####
The objectives of the award are to:
1. recognize KFUPM faculty members and researchers who have generated publications that have received a high level of recognition by other researchers;
2. encourage KFUPM faculty and researchers to carry out seminal work that attracts interest from other researchers.

##### 5. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
#####
1. All KFUPM faculty members and researchers are eligible for the award where:
- they have published a paper that has been highly cited (i.e., 500 citations, not including self-citations) according to Scopus;
- their paper was published while the applicant was affiliated with KFUPM, and the affiliation appears on the publication;
- their paper has at least 50% authors from KFUPM;
- the corresponding author is from KFUPM.
- their paper has major contribution to UN SDG (<https://blog.scopus.com/posts/sustainable-development-goals-sdgs-on-scopus>).
- their paper has an international co-author;
2. Where an applicant has previously received an award for a highly cited publication, they are eligible for a second award where the publication accumulates an additional 500 citations (not including self-citations) according to Scopus.

##### 7. SELECTION OF RECIPIENTS
#####
1. The awards will be based on the number of citations for publications indexed in Scopus.
2. DR will monitor Scopus, determine award recipients and make awards throughout the academic year.
3. DR will inform award recipients.

##### 9. IMPLEMENTATION, COMPLIANCE, AND REPORTING
#####
1. DR is responsible for monitoring the implementation of these guidelines using the following performance indicators:
- the number of awards allocated, annually;
- the number of issues reported in relation to the awards scheme.
2. The Dean of Research is responsible for ensuring compliance with these guidelines.
3. Non-compliance with these guidelines shall be immediately reported to VPRI.
