Advancing Knowledge Through Purposeful Research
At KFUPM, research is not confined to traditional disciplines. We promote an environment where interdisciplinary collaboration, analytical thinking, and cross-functional goals intersect to generate practical results.
With more than 20 active research centers, we support projects that both address industry needs and improve quality of life.
The university works in close partnership with the Research, Development, and Innovation Authority (RDIA), aligning institutional goals with national priorities. In 2024 alone, 191 measurable projects were launched in support of this shared mission. Our work also contributes to broader international research frameworks, where outcomes are evaluated not only by academic merit but also by their potential impact.

Interdisciplinary Research Centers (IRCs)
IRCs promote the interplay between technology, science, and business-related disciplines, vying for deeper insights that no single field could achieve alone. This cross-disciplinary approach both raises and answers important questions about the role of knowledge in today’s rapidly changing world.

Applied Research Centers (ARCs)
ARCs prioritize research with direct relevance to public and private sector needs. These centers inform government policies and nonprofit practices while helping raise the baseline for environmental and industrial standards.
ARC for Environment and Marine Studies
ARC for Metrology, Standards, and Testing
Center of Excellence in Development of Non-Profit Organization
Petroleum Conversion Research Center
Joint Research Centers (JRCs)
Formed in collaboration with a government agency or private entity, JRCs conduct research in areas of mutual interest. They pool expertise, funding, and infrastructure, enabling more impactful results with practical implications.

KACST Center for Energy Efficiency
KACARE Center for Energy Research
Research Consortia
At KFUPM, two groups made up of multiple organizations undergo research focused on niche projects and goals around large-scale initiatives. These consortia benefit from shared resources and diverse perspectives, that create entirely new research models and support long-term solutions.

Meaningful Contributions with Broader Reach
The work of KFUPM’s research centers has a ripple effect, impacting policy, innovation, and education far beyond our campus. From patent development to full-cycle prototyping, we support researchers at every step of the journey.
As we continue to invest in long-term partnerships and rigorous inquiry, we spare no effort in ensuring that theoretical work is translated into practical outcomes. Find out what challenges we’ve addressed so far and how impactful our results have already been.
