Scholarships

Source: https://law.utexas.edu/financial-aid/scholarships-info/ Parent: https://law.utexas.edu/admissions/

Scholarships are provided through the generosity of alumni and friends of Texas Law and are awarded based on scholastic merit and/or financial need. All incoming students (residents, nonresidents, and international students) are eligible for scholarship consideration and if awarded as an incoming student, the scholarship will renew automatically for the second and third year of law school enrollment provided the student meets minimum performance standards and remain enrolled full-time in the J.D. program at Texas Law.

Texas Law offers scholarships that range from $1,000 to several full tuition and fee awards each year. On average, more than 94% of all students have been awarded scholarships in the last three years.

How To Apply

Incoming Students : Admitted students may apply for scholarships using a Scholarship Application that is made available in the Dashboard after an admission offer. In general, beginning in February scholarship decisions are rendered 2-3 weeks from the application submission date, which are communicated through email.

Students who are awarded a scholarship receive that award for each of their three years at Texas Law. The award is guaranteed provided they satisfy [minimum performance standards](https://law.utexas.edu/students/policies-and-procedures/probation-and-dismissal/) and remain enrolled full-time in the J.D. program. With the exception of international applicants, students are required to [submit a FAFSA](https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa) even if they do not intend to borrow federal student loans to be considered for scholarships.

- ***William Wayne Justice Center for Public Interest Law Scholarships***\
Texas Law offers a number of **full-tuition** scholarship opportunities for applicants interested in pursuing a career in public interest law through the [William Wayne Justice Center](https://law.utexas.edu/publicinterest/type/scholarships/). Applicants must apply to the Law School before applying to the Public Interest Law Scholarships but need not wait for an admissions decision before submitting their scholarship application. Please refer to the Center’s website for the application deadline.
- ***Texas Law Full-Tuition Scholarships***\
The Law School offers a number of **full-tuition** awards for the most competitive students based on academic merit, LSAT, and undergraduate GPA. Admitted students who are competitive will be invited to participate in the application process. Many of the awards come with additional stipend support.
- ***Scholarship Reconsideration Process***\
Our Scholarship Committee gives complete and fair consideration to all applications for scholarship support. No single factor determines whether a scholarship offer will be made. If Texas Law is one of your top choices and you feel that our scholarship award is not sufficient to enable your enrollment, you may request a **one-time** review of your scholarship offer. This limited reconsideration opportunity will consider scholarship offers from ***similarly ranked schools*** along with other factors such as merit and need. Although Texas Law will not be able to match all scholarship offers from peer schools and will not engage in a bidding competition, our Scholarship Committee is happy to reevaluate the initial offer. We are committed to doing all we can to help every admitted student who wants to join our community. The Scholarship Reconsideration Form will be available to admitted students starting **February 1**through the [Dashboard](https://law.utexas.edu/dashboard/financial-aid/). The Scholarship Committee will begin reviewing scholarship reconsideration requests after **March 15.**If you have any further questions, please email [lawfinaid@law.utexas.edu](mailto:lawfinaid@law.utexas.edu).

In addition to scholarships from the Law School, international students are encouraged to explore scholarship opportunities made available through [Texas Global](https://global.utexas.edu/isss/advising-services/scholarships). Moreover, international students who are awarded scholarships should be made aware of the [tax obligations](https://global.utexas.edu/isss/advising-services/taxes) depending on their tax status.

Current Students : Each year, rising second- and third-year students are required to submit a scholarship application through LASSO (available in the Spring semester) and submit a FAFSA (if they are eligible to do so) regardless of whether they intend to borrow federal student loans. The Law School offers a number of scholarships that students may apply for that are based on specific criteria, e.g., performance in particular areas of law, student organization/journal involvement, and leadership. Please note that we are not able to negotiate the original scholarship you received as an incoming student.

Scholarship Requirements and Policies

All scholarship recipients must acknowledge and adhere to the Scholarship Requirements and Policies. Scholarship awards will not be applied until a recipient agrees to these guidelines.

Scholarship Retention

Year No. of Enrollees No. of Students with Scholarships No. of Students whose Scholarships were Reduced or Eliminated
2023 260 224 0
2022 292 234 2
2021 417 342 0

This chart shows the number of awards reduced or eliminated. Texas Law does not award conditional scholarships.

Grants

Like scholarships, grants are financial awards that students do not have to pay back. In general, they are funded by institutional or government sources (e.g., Texas Public Educational Grant Program) and are typically based on a student’s financial need. Because grants are typically awarded to students based on information provided on their Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA), we strongly encourage students to submit a FAFSA even if they do not intend to borrow federal loans as they may be eligible for need-based grants that require a FAFSA submission.
