Eligibility Criteria

Students who attend UTRGV to fulfill their CAP requirements to transfer to UT Austin will have to attend UTRGV for summer, fall and spring. Below is the required course-taking pattern for a UT CAP student at UTRGV. Please note, UT CAP students at UTRGV must start in the summer and are not eligible for a fully online course load.

Students ranked in the top 75% of their high school graduating class will be eligible to participate in CAP at UT Rio Grande Valley.
If you do not meet this eligibility criterion, you can contact the UT Rio Grande Valley admissions contact to request an exception (which is not guaranteed).

Curriculum Requirements

UTRGV 2026-2027 CAP Course List

Summer: Must take 6-8 hours

Students must begin classes in the Summer II – 5 Week Session. Students can take six to eight hours (two courses minimum).
Only one course may be online or hybrid. Please note that to fulfill UT CAP requirements, UT Austin will only accept courses taken at UTRGV.

Fall: Must take 9-11 hours

Students will enroll in a minimum of nine credit hours and a maximum of 11 credit hours if necessary (three courses maximum).
No more than two courses may be taken online or hybrid.

Spring: Must take 15 hours

Students should enroll in 15 credit hours unless they will meet with 30 credit hour requirement with fewer hours (five courses minimum).
No more than two courses may be taken online or hybrid.

Scholarships

Students who select to attend UTRGV via the UT CAP program forfeit any UTRGV scholarships. Other aid may be available for students through federal and state aid programs.

Housing

UTRGV offers on-campus housing options on both the Edinburg and Brownsville campuses. First Time Freshmen living outside the four-county Rio Grande Valley fall under the first-year student housing policy and are required to live on campus during their first year of coursework.

Testing

CAP students are required to meet TSI requirements in order to register at any state, public institution. If you are TSI exempt based on ACT, SAT, STARR, AP test scores, completed college coursework or other qualifying exemption, you must provide official proof to UT Rio Grande Valley. If you are deficient in any area of TSI, you will be required to enroll in developmental coursework in the area of deficiency during your freshman year at UT Rio Grande Valley. Developmental courses will not count toward the 30 credit hours that are required to successfully complete CAP.

Selecting UT Rio Grande Valley

Complete CAP agreement by May 1.\ After you submit your online CAP agreement, UT Austin will forward your information to UTRGV.
Receive an email from UTRGV in 7-10 days.\ Please allow 7-10 business days from the time you submit your CAP agreement for these emails to arrive. The emails will be sent to the same address you provided UT Austin when you submitted your application.
