No course counted toward another degree may be counted toward a master's degree at The University of Texas at Austin, either directly or by substitution.

Work done for the master’s degree may be included in the work for the doctoral degree if the work meets the following criteria:

It is deemed acceptable to the Graduate Studies Committee, the supervising committee and the graduate dean.

It has not already been used toward another doctoral degree.

Dual Degree Programs

Students in a dual degree program must meet the course requirements for both degrees. Courses common to the two curricula in a dual degree program are included on the program of work for one of the degrees and are waived by the other degree program as specified in the dual degree program requirements.

The program of work on which courses are waived must meet the Graduate School’s minimum credit-hour requirements for the degree.
