# Registration Planning

Registration for upper-division courses at the Law School takes place in two phases. (Students are registered for their 1L courses automatically by the Student Affairs Office.) First, during [Early Registration](https://law.utexas.edu/early-registration/help/), students rank up to 10 courses and two seminars in order of preference. The Early Registration system is not first-come, first-served. Instead, after the system closes, an algorithm awards classes based on priority (including class year and type of class). Second, students may make adjustments to their schedules during multiple [add/drop periods](https://law.utexas.edu/students/registration-planning/registration-adds-and-drops/).

[Academic advising](https://law.utexas.edu/students/academic-advising/) is available throughout Early Registration to help students select classes, as well as provide guidance on rankings.
