The Graduate School awards a small number of Harrington Dissertation Fellowships, which include a stipend between $45,000-$50,000 for 12 months, tuition and required fees, an allowance for student medical insurance and $2,000 for miscellaneous expenses.

The Harrington Dissertation Fellowship is a one-year award. To be eligible for a Harrington Dissertation Fellowship, a student must be currently enrolled at UT Austin and must be a candidate for a doctoral degree (Ph.D., Ed.D., or DMA). Students who satisfy these conditions, and who are nominated by their programs for the Outstanding Graduate Research Fellowship, will be considered for Harrington Dissertation Fellowships.

Outstanding Graduate Research Fellowship

The Outstanding Graduate Research Fellowship is based on the student’s record since coming to UT. It includes a stipend of $38,000 for 12 months, health insurance assistance and tuition assistance that pays the cost of in-state tuition and fees up to nine semester credit hours for the fall and spring semesters and three for summer. Some of these awards are funded by the endowments listed below.

Graduate Recognition Award

The Graduate Recognition Award pays a $1,000 stipend. These stipends are awarded to students who were nominated for the University Graduate Continuing Fellowship but not selected for the full fellowship. Recipients are not eligible for tuition or health insurance assistance.

Fall/Spring Dissertation Writing Fellowships

The Graduate School offers a limited number of fall and/or spring Dissertation Writing Fellowships. These fellowships are awarded to students who are in candidacy and expected to graduate within the same academic year of the award. They provide a monthly stipend, in-state tuition to cover nine hours in the semester of the award and an insurance supplement.

Summer Excellence Fellowships

The Graduate School offers a limited number of Summer Excellence Fellowships. They provide a monthly stipend, in-state tuition to cover nine hours in the semester of the award and an insurance supplement.

Nominations

Graduate School Awards System

All nominations for Graduate School fellowships must be entered into the online Graduate School Awards System, accessible in EASI.

The graduate coordinator can initiate the nomination process with the student’s UT EID. The students are then notified to supply their information, upload their CV and personal statement and supply the names and email addresses of three persons they want notified to submit letters of reference on their behalf. The graduate adviser or graduate coordinator may be asked to upload a letter of nomination and answer a few short questions. Nominations can be submitted by the graduate adviser before all the reference letters are in.
