Transfer US Citizen and Permanent Resident Applicants
To be considered for financial assistance at any time during their undergraduate years at Brown, transfer students must apply for financial aid when they initially apply for admission.
Transfer students are admitted to Brown under a need-aware admission policy, meaning an applicant's ability to pay is factored into the admission decision.
Financial aid application materials allow us to determine a transfer student’s eligibility for Brown’s institutional financial aid, and for federal aid. To receive a provisional financial aid decision with the admission decision, the student must submit all of the required financial aid application materials by the deadline.
- Students who do not submit financial aid application materials with their initial admission application will not be considered for University Scholarship at any point during their undergraduate years at Brown, regardless of any changes in their family’s financial situation.
- Transfer students can be considered for any federal/state grants and loans for which they qualify, regardless of whether they applied for financial aid at the time of admission. The Office of Financial Aid will continue to assist admitted transfer students in their efforts to obtain loans and federal/state aid.
- As long as transfer students apply for and receive a response from our office regarding financial need at the time of admission, transfer students can apply for university aid consideration in future years assuming they meet the published application deadlines.
The deadline to submit both the CSS Profile and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is March 1, 2026.
** If you are applying for Spring 2027 the deadline is October 3, 2026.

Brown does not provide fee waivers for the CSS Profile application. Instead, we rely on the College Board to determine who automatically qualifies for a waiver during the electronic application submission process. When completing the payment process for the CSS Profile, students may find that fees are automatically waived.
After filing the CSS Profile, a student mayreceive an email communication from the College Board providing instructions on how to submit documents through IDOC, if they are deemed necessary. IDOC requirements may include:
- 2024 federal income tax return (or non-tax filer statement) for custodial parent(s)
- 2024 federal income tax return (or non-tax filer statement) for student
- 2024 federal income tax return (or non-tax filer statement) for noncustodial parent, if applicable
- 2024 federal income tax return for partnerships and/or corporations, if applicable

- The Office of Financial Aid uses the College Board’s IDOC service to electronically collect tax and other financial documents from families.
- Brown does not require an IDOC packet from every family.
- If you do not receive a request from IDOC, that means the Office of Financial Aid has enough information to provide an estimated financial aid award at the time of admission.
