Environmental Engineering
The Sc.B. program in Environmental Engineering provides students with the tools to develop sustainable solutions to complicated environmental problems and design real-world solutions that consider risk, sustainability, life-cycle principles, and environmental impacts.
Environmental engineers use the principles of engineering, mathematics, biology and chemistry to develop and implement engineering solutions to protect human health and the environment from the adverse impacts of environmental pollution. Their work includes water and wastewater treatment, air pollution control, soil and groundwater remediation, site characterization and risk assessment, life cycle assessment, and climate change mitigation.
Student Goals
Students in this concentration will:
- Acquire knowledge and skill sets to master contaminant mass balance, transport, reactivity, and its removal from the environment
- Conduct design projects, computational assignments, and hands-on laboratory experiments covering environmental processes in air, water, and soil systems
- Complete a final capstone design project for an environmental engineering system that includes contaminant risk assessment, sustainability, life-cycle principles, pollution environmental impacts and remediation
Tracks
- Professional Track

Brown graduates in the Sc.B. Environmental Engineering program pursue diverse careers in consulting firms, government agencies, non-profit organizations, and industry where they apply scientific principles and technical skills to protect human health and the environment, design and implement sustainable technologies to provide clean drinking water, mitigate impacts of climate change, and advance renewable energy. Graduates of the program often pursue advanced degrees in engineering, health sciences, business, law, and medicine.
What are Environmental Engineering concentrators doing…
The Director of Undergraduate Studies is typically the first point of contact for prospective concentrators. Once students have declared, they may be assigned a specific concentration advisor from within the department or program.
