Congratulations to Gisbert Schneider, head of the Computer-assisted Drug Design group at D-BSSE, on receiving the Pharmacy Science Award in the category ‘pharmaceutical chemistry’ for advancing research in AI-supported drug development. The award was established by Phoenix, a company specialised in pharmaceutical wholesale and pharmacy operations.

In his research, Gisbert uses artificial intelligence (AI) to design new molecules that can dock specifically to certain proteins in the body. The AI uses millions of known interactions between active substances and proteins and also takes into account the spatial structure of the target protein. This enables it to design novel and effective molecules that can easily be manufactured - and may serve as a starting point for drugs.

The method was tested using an important receptor (PPAR-gamma) as an example. Two of the proposed active substances were produced in the laboratory and showed the desired effect – a promising step towards AI-supported drug development.
