Illinois International’s Global and Intercultural Experiences (GIE) programming features a dynamic range of events and activities that foster community, connection, and cultural learning across the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Designed to support the holistic well-being and global engagement of our diverse campus, GIE programs and events include social, cultural, experiential, and informational opportunities that bring people together across backgrounds, identities, and disciplines.
From community-building events and cultural celebrations to workshops, social gatherings, and campuswide initiatives, these opportunities enrich the Illinois experience for international and domestic students, scholars, faculty, staff, and community members. These programs help participants build meaningful relationships, explore diverse perspectives, and experience life at Illinois in deeper and more connected ways.
GIE programming is guided by the Eight Dimensions of Wellness, supporting social, cultural, emotional, environmental, and intellectual well-being through intentional experiences that strengthen belonging and intercultural understanding.
GIE Goals
- Cultivate a welcoming and inclusive campus community through shared intercultural experiences

- Provide opportunities for participants to engage with global perspectives outside the classroom
- Support international students and scholars in navigating life at Illinois
- Create spaces where domestic and international participants learn from one another

- Coffee Across Cultures Hour fostering conversations that bring people together across backgrounds.
- Intercultural Spotlight Series featuring country-focused panels and cultural exchange.
- Global Talent Show, International Education Week, cultural fairs, and celebrations showcasing global traditions and creativity.
- Trips and excursions exploring Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, and the Midwest.
- Workshops and informational sessions supporting life at Illinois and intercultural well-being.
- Family-friendly programming building community for scholars and their dependents.
All GIE programs are free and open to all members of the Illinois community, including students, scholars, faculty, staff, and community members.
