for the Undergraduate Minor in Spanish

The Spanish minor allows students to continue developing their language skills and cultural insights, regardless of their major. Electives include coursework in linguistics, literature, and cultural studies, as well as courses that prepare students to use Spanish in professional settings including healthcare, business, and the non-profit sector.

1 : With permission of the advisor, students will be able to take one SPAN course at the 200-level or higher that is taught in a language other than Spanish. Or, one 200-level SPAN course can be substituted with a language course in CATL, BASQ, PORT or LAST (Quechua), from among the following options: BASQ 401, BASQ 402; CATL 401, CATL 402, PORT 401, PORT 402; and LAST 445. This course does not count for advanced hours and does not substitute for SPAN 228.

1. Intellectual Reasoning and Knowledge
2. Minors in Spanish will acquire and apply broad knowledge about the Spanish language and the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.
3. Translingual competence
4. Minors in Spanish will gain an understanding of the Spanish language, “languages” in general, the social nature of languages and demonstrate intercultural communicative competence.
5. Transcultural competence
6. Through critical reflection, minors in Spanish will gain insights on the products, practices and perspectives of their own culture, cultures of the Spanish-speaking world and the nature of “culture” itself.
7. Communicative Competence in Spanish
8. In reading, writing, listening comprehension and speaking, students will acquire intermediate proficiency in Spanish as described by the standards set by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).
