for the Undergraduate Minor in French

The French minor develops a student’s proficiency in spoken and written French while introducing them to the study of literature, culture, and society in France and the broader francophone world. Through coursework in conversation, grammar and writing, and cultural analysis, students explore questions of language, identity, politics, and everyday life across diverse media. The minor complements majors all majors by strengthening intercultural communication skills, critical analysis, and preparation for globally oriented careers.

for the Undergraduate Minor in French

Upon completing a minor in French, students will be able to:

• Language proficiency and accuracy:
• Demonstrate an intermediate level of proficiency and accuracy in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in interpretive, presentational, and interpersonal modes of communication (roughly corresponding to Intermediate High on ACTFL / B2 on CEFRL), especially on familiar topics and everyday situations.
• Research skills and literacy in texts, media, and technology in French:
• Locate, understand, and make use of culturally authentic and relevant sources in French (texts, media, and digital resources); use appropriate tools to support language production.
• Intercultural awareness, knowledge, and competence
• Recognize and describe products, practices, and perspectives of the French and Francophone world, and make comparisons to their own and other cultures, demonstrating growing intercultural curiosity and sensitivity.
• Knowledge about literature and the visual arts in French:
• Gain familiarity with major authors, works, genres, or movements in French and Francophone literature and visual culture, and discuss them in relation to broad historical or cultural contexts.
• Knowledge about French linguistics:
• Demonstrate awareness of key features of the French language.
