for the Undergraduate Minor in Leadership Studies


The Leadership Studies Minor is available to all undergraduate students in good standing at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Drawing from social psychology, philosophy, organizational development, communication, and educational theory, the minor enhances your understanding of the social and organizational processes that influence effective leadership across diverse contexts.

for the Undergraduate Minor in Leadership Studies


The minor in Leadership Studies provides instruction in leadership theories and their applications and is open to all undergraduate students who have a minimum 2.0 GPA. The minor requires a total of seventeen or eighteen semester hours: nine hours of required foundation courses, five to six hours of elective context courses, and three hours in a capstone course. Students within the Organizational Community Leadership concentration of the ALEC major are unable to add this minor.

To declare the Leadership Studies Minor, students need to complete the online Minor Declaration Form.

Learning outcomes for the Leadership Studies Minor:

  1. Analyze and apply various leadership theories, models, and frameworks.
  2. Practice reflection and self-assessment to explore personal values, strengths, and areas of growth.
  3. Understand the role of ethics and personal responsibility in leadership and followership.
  4. Identify and practice interpersonal skills that influence team development and group dynamics.
  5. Develop effective practices for team building, communication, and decision-making.
  6. Create and implement a team-based, collaborative change initiative.
  7. Evaluate the social and organizational processes that influence effective leadership in diverse contexts.
  8. Identify factors that influence performance and productivity in the workplace.
  9. Apply a systems thinking approach to practical problems.
  10. Recognize the role of stakeholders and power structures in change initiatives.
  11. Understand the global context of leadership.
