for the Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Minor in the Study of the Islamic World


An interdisciplinary minor in the Study of the Islamic World is offered by the Center for South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. It is designed for students interested in developing an expertise in one or more parts of the Islamic world or in Islamic culture generally, as a complement to their disciplinary major. Completion of the minor requires 19 credit hours in applicable courses with a minimum grade-point average of 2.75.

Students completing the minor will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate foundational knowledge of the Islamic World, including its cultures, histories, and societies, and develop focused expertise in a specific region or thematic area.
  2. Apply language skills in context, demonstrating proficiency at the fourth-semester level or equivalent in an Islamic World language (e.g., Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Swahili, Wolof) to engage with primary sources and cultural materials.
