Your Notice of Admission letter and Admitted Student Checklist in myIllini will help guide you through your next steps as an admitted student. If you have general questions, check out our admitted first-year or admitted transfer FAQs. In addition, below are some of the most common international-specific questions we receive.
How can I get more information about the visa process?
You can read more about this process on our student visa page.
I'm currently attending a U.S. school on a visa. Do I need to submit the I-20 application?
If you are currently studying on a J-1 or F-1 visa, yes, you will need to submit an I-20 application. You will also need to request that your current institution transfer your SEVIS record to our campus. You can do so through your myIllini account. If you are on a visa type other than an F-1 or J-1, contact our office so we can advise you accordingly.
When should I arrive on campus?
You must arrive on campus by the start date listed on your I-20 or DS-2019. You can also enter the U.S. up to 30 days before your program start date.
Official check-in dates and instructions can be found on the International Student Scholar Services website.
I'm an admitted first-year student. What do I need to submit to verify my self-reported academic information?
Official test scores must be sent directly from the testing agency. In addition, you must provide official academic records for all years of school you reported in the application for years 9 to 12, including official copies of all school certificates and external exam results.
To be considered official, documents must be mailed directly from the issuing institution or testing authority in a sealed envelope or submitted via one of our approved vendors. You can view the documents for your country on our required documents page.
How do I submit my transcripts?
Transcripts must be mailed directly from the issuing institution or testing authority in a sealed envelope or submitted via one of our approved vendors.
Can international students change their start term to summer?
International applicants are rarely approved to start in the summer due to complications regarding the visa application.
What should I do if my A levels/final transcript will not be available until after the July 1 deadline?
Submit secondary transcripts for Year 10-11 and contact our office before July 1 at international-admissions@illinois.edu. For A levels, we understand results will not be available until August. If Year 9 was done at the secondary level, transcripts verifying those courses and grades also need to be submitted by the deadline.
What should I do if my school only uses IB examination results for Year 12 grades and they will not be available until after the July 1 deadline?
Submit secondary transcripts for Year 10-12 by July 10th and contact our office before July 1 at international-admissions@illinois.edu. If Year 9 was done at the secondary level, transcripts verifying those courses and grades also need to be submitted by the deadline.
