Are you admitted to a programme or course, or nominated for an exchange? If you're moving to Sweden to study, you're an incoming student. You'll be covered by either Student IN or FAS+, and will also have separate personal injury insurance during school hours.

Questions about student insurance cover should be directed to your exchange, programme or course coordinator at Lund University.

Student IN or FAS+ insurance

The type of insurance you get through Lund University, Student IN or FAS+, depends on whether you are a EU/EEA citizen or not and what type of study agreement you have.

You will normally get Student IN if you are:

Tuition fees

You will normally get FAS+ if you are:

If you are eligible, you will automatically be assigned the correct insurance. See below for exceptions.

When you are not eligible for Student IN or FAS+

Check to see if any of the following situations apply to you. If this is the case, you are not eligible for Student IN or FAS+ insurance and may need to take action yourself.

If you already live in Sweden

If you already live in Sweden and have a (temporary) personal identity number, you must supplement your personal injury insurance during school hours with private insurance. Home insurance (Swedish: hemförsäkring) is usually a good place to start, as it offers broad cover. You should also consider accident insurance for your leisure time (Swedish: olycksfallsförsäkring).

If you are an incoming trainee

As an incoming trainee, you are not normally covered by Student IN. Contact the relevant faculty (or similar) – they are responsible for arranging the appropriate insurance.

When Student IN and FAS+ apply

Student IN and FAS+ are valid from two weeks before the start of your studies until two weeks after the end of your studies. This includes Orientation Weeks and final exams. Check the exact dates in your Letter of Acceptance or Notification of Admission Results. During this period, the insurance applies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in Sweden.

What the insurance covers

During the period specified above, the insurance covers:

Note that insurance claims may have a deductible (part of the cost that you have to pay).

For the full terms and conditions, see the website of the Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency (Kammarkollegiet):

When you might need extra insurance

If your travel or activities fall outside the above conditions, you will most likely need private insurance to ensure sufficient cover and avoid problems. Below are some specific examples that you should read carefully.

Student IN and FAS+ only cover you as an individual student. Any family members joining you should ensure that they have or arrange sufficient insurance cover. Also see the information on the following page:

Coming with family

Examples of when Student IN and FAS+ don't apply

Below are examples of when Student IN and FAS+ do not apply or do not provide full cover. Consider whether you need additional private insurance. Please note that most of the examples listed below refer to cases after you arrival in Sweden.

Proof of insurance for residence permit

When applying for a residence permit through the Swedish Migration Agency as a non-EU/EEA citizen, you'll need to provide proof of insurance in the online application form.

For the FAS+ insurance, it is usually sufficient to refer to this webpage and attach the conditions below. When it comes to the Student IN insurance, you can attach your ’Letter of acceptance’.

Lund University will not send you a separate insurance certificate.

Personal injury insurance during school hours

All students at Lund University are automatically covered by accident insurance. This is a separate insurance and is administered differently from Student IN and FAS+. Claims are also made and sent in a different way.

When personal injury insurance applies

The insurance applies during scheduled school hours. School hours are defined as activities organised by Lund University that your programme or course specifies as part of your studies. This also includes travel between your home address in Sweden and the University.

What the insurance covers

This insurance applies if you are injured in an accident or contract an illness in connection with your studies.

For the full terms and conditions, see the website of the Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency (Kammarkollegiet):

Personal injury insurance, terms and conditions

When you might need extra insurance

This insurance does not apply to (leisure) activities organised by other parties, such as student unions or student nations. For these situations, you need Student IN, FAS+ or private home and/or accident insurance.
