Information for admitted and nominated students

As an international student in Sweden, you're entitled to use the Swedish healthcare system. Medical staff usually speak good English. Before you come to Sweden, there are a few things you should be aware of and consider. Read this page carefully.

No vaccination requirements

There are no vaccination requirements for entering Sweden or travelling within the European Union.

Bringing prescription medication

If you take prescription medication regularly, there are some important things to consider. Some medicines are either not allowed or only allowed in small amounts, and you may not be able to get the same medicine in Sweden.

Check if you can:

bring your medication with you (in the right amount for your stay)
get the same or a similar medication in Sweden.

If you have questions about prescription medicines, you can call the 1177 Swedish Healthcare Guide helpline (Swedish: '1177 Vårdguiden'). Call +46 771 1177 00 if you're using an international number instead of a Swedish one.

Health insurance options

Before you leave for Sweden, you should carefully consider your health insurance options to make sure you're covered. Otherwise, healthcare can get very expensive.

For studies longer than 12 months

If you'll study at Lund University longer than 12 months, you should register in the Swedish Population Register at the Swedish Tax Office (Swedish: 'Skatteverket') upon arrival to receive a Swedish personal identity number. It usually takes a few weeks before you receive it.

With this number, you'll pay the same patient fee as Swedish citizens at healthcare centres/medical facilities.

If you need medical care until then:

Use your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), if you're an EU/EEA citizen.
Use your student insurance through the University, Student IN or FAS+. Note, however, that this does not cover routine, non-urgent healthcare or healthcare outside Sweden (see link below for insurance information).

For studies shorter than 12 months

If you'll study at Lund University for less than 12 months, you won't be able to register for a Swedish identity number and will therefore not be covered by the Swedish social security system.

You will still have student insurance offered by Lund University, Student IN or FAS+. Read the information on the page below carefully to see if your student insurance will be sufficient or if you need to take out additional insurance.
