## Overview
This course provides you with a fundamental understanding of how Earth system models work. You will learn how to handle large datasets and analyse complex systems. The target group for the course are those who want to learn how to use climate models in various branches of geoscience.
The course covers the following topics:
- Introduction to Earth system models
- Data management and analysis
- Climate reconstructions
- Climate impact on vegetation
- Model ensembles and uncertainty analysis
- Project work involving programming

## Teaching and learning
The teaching is interactive, varied, and combines both theory and practice. You will take part in lectures, group work, and practical exercises. The course includes lectures where you will learn about the different components of Earth system models, such as the ocean, land, and atmosphere. You will also work with data management and the analysis of model data. In the second half of the course, the focus shifts to applications in climate reconstructions and the impact of climate on vegetation. You will also carry out a programming-based project and present your results both orally and in writing.

## Requirements and selection
### Prerequisites
For admission to the course 90 credits in natural science or engineering, including knowledge equivalent to BERN01, Modelling in Computational Science, 7.5 credits and English 6/B are required.
### Selection criteria
Seats are allocated according to: ECTS (HPAV): 100 %.
## Tuition fees
### Tuition fees for non-EU/EEA citizens
Citizens of countries outside:
- The European Union (EU)
- The European Economic Area (EEA) and
- Switzerland
are required to pay tuition fees. You pay an instalment of the tuition fee in advance of each \
semester.
