The Legal and Compliance Services team provides legal advice to all areas of the University, including in relation to:

Drafting and negotiating commercial contracts
Data Protection and the UK GDPR
Dispute resolution
Compliance risk
Regulatory matters (e.g. Office for Students)
Provision of specialist legal advice

What do we do?

Contracts

Our Contracts team handle a large portfolio, working with clients across the University to support day to day commercial activities as well as standalone strategic projects.

Data Protection

Our Data Protection team handle all things 'DP', including:

Processing and responding to all Freedom of Information (FOI) and Data Subject Rights (DSR) requests that the University receives;
Managing data breaches reports;
Providing guidance on privacy notices;
Drafting Data Sharing Agreements and other DP contracts;
And responding to any other weird and wonderful DP requests that come our way.

Employment

Our Employment lawyer works closely with the HR Employee Relations Team to provide expert legal advice on a range of employment matters, as well as supporting with Employment Tribunal cases.

Litigation and General legal advice

Our litigators are ready to support colleagues with any legal claims that may be brought against the University, as well as providing legal advice on a wide range of topics including ensuring the institution remains compliant with current legislation through input into policies and University Regulations. We also support colleagues in procuring specialist legal advice where appropriate.

Insurance

Our Group Insurance Manager manages all aspects of the University's insurance portfolio including any claims against the insurance policies, including inter alia personal injury (PI), professional negligence, motor, travel and property claims.

We do not provide legal advice to students or personal legal advice.

Practical things

We can be found in University House, just on the edge of central campus every Tuesday and Thursday. The team works remotely on Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays (subject to operational requirements).
