Student Finance and how your child will fund their time at university is one of the key concerns parents have.

Costs at university can be split down into course costs and living costs.

Course costs

Tuition fees

Most UK students don’t have to pay their fees upfront when studying. Eligible students can apply for a tuition fee loan, which will be directly paid to the university from the Government. Tuition fee loans are not based on household income.

Other costs related to the course could be textbooks, printing costs and travel for course-related trips. It is important to do the research on any costs that might be associated with the relevant course – our Living costs and budgeting page has further information.

Living costs

Some living costs to consider include accommodation, food and groceries, bills, mobile phone, travel, socialising, health and shopping. Check our Living costs and budgeting page for further information on how to budget for these.

UK students can apply for a Maintenance Loan from Student Loans Company to help with living costs.
