## RESEARCH PROFILE

Angie Carola Alarcón Rios is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), working within the Microsystems Group led by Professor Jaap den Toonder. She specializes in microbial physiology, antibiotic susceptibility testing, and microfluidic diagnostics, focusing on how bacterial growth and antimicrobial resistance can be characterized and detected in real time using fluorescence-based micro-assay technologies.

Her work lies at the intersection of microbiology, microfluidics, and biomedical engineering, combining quantitative biology with device optimization to improve diagnostic accuracy and speed. Through her hybrid appointment with ShanX Medtech BV, led by Dr. Sophia E. Shanko, she contributes to the ELENI project, which aims to advance rapid, phenotypic antibiotic susceptibility testing by integrating micro-scale engineering and sensor-based metabolic readouts. Angie’s research ultimately supports the development of next-generation diagnostic tools that enable personalized and evidence-based infection management.

Her broader scientific interests include antimicrobial resistance evolution, pharmacological treatment strategies, and diagnostic assay development. ## ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

Angie Carola Alarcón Ríos holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from the Universidad del Tolima (Colombia) and two master’s degrees, a Master of Science in Biomedicine and a Master of Public Health (MPH), from the University of Tromsø (Norway). She conducted her doctoral research in molecular microbiology and antimicrobial resistance evolution at Leiden University under the supervision of Dr. Coen van Hasselt, Dr. Daniel Rozen and Prof. Dr. Catherijne Knibbe, where she investigated the genetic and phenotypic mechanisms underlying resistance evolution in Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
