Are you enthusiastic about everything that is technically possible to make the world more sustainable? Nowadays, companies and organizations are increasingly being rated on their sustainability efforts. What is their impact on humans, society, the environment and climate? Innovations in the field of sustainability can increase the commercial success of companies, but they also contribute to a better world. This is what makes the field of Sustainable Innovation so interesting!
Technically, there is already a lot possible in terms of sustainability. The biggest challenge is to actually implement these possibilities. In order to introduce new sustainable technologies, there is a need for collaboration and coordination between civilians, the government and companies. Multiple and different parties are thus always involved in the whole process. In Sustainable Innovation you learn to view an issue regarding sustainability from these parties' perspective. You could specifically start with these projects, for example:
- establishing energy cooperatives;
- developing hydrogen power plants;
- making growth plans for heat networks;
- developing solar home systems;
- encouraging the growth of shared-mobility.
All these examples involve several factors in addition to technology: costs, risks, regulation, social acceptance, and so on. In this education, you will learn to place recent developments and discussions on sustainability in a long-term perspective. You will also study how Dutch developments relate at the international level.

A unique combination of social science and technical subjects
The combination of social science and technical subjects is what makes the Sustainable Innovation bachelor's program so unique. This bachelor's degree is an engineering program and consists of at least one-third of courses in the engineering field. Depending on the chosen specialization you will take these courses at the faculty of Mechanical Engineering or Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences. Our students praise the program for its interesting subjects, the space to fill in part of the education themselves with electives, the small-scale teaching, the accessibility of the teachers and the good atmosphere.
What do you learn?
This study is very contemporary, that is clear. But what is it exactly that you learn? With this bachelor, you will gain experience in both technical, economic and social science disciplines. You mostly learn about:
- the interaction between technological, economic and social developments;
- fundamental changes in the long term, or 'transitions';
- worldwide developments in terms of sustainability;
- the various aspects of the innovation process: invention, innovation, diffusion, use, policy, governance and societal implications.
You will apply this knowledge in areas such as:
- energy systems;
- sustainable mobility;
- built environment and spatial planning;
- policy and practice.
Using the multidisciplinary curriculum, offered in a mix of theory and practice, you will develop a broad understanding of sustainability issues. In Sustainable Innovation, you study innovations that help businesses, government and users produce and consume sustainably. You will learn to speak the language of engineering and how economic and social arguments weigh in on decisions about sustainable innovations.
After graduating, you will receive your diploma Bachelor of Science in Innovation Sciences. Want to know more? Check out the Study Program for more information.
Who are you?
You are an aspiring student with the ambition to create a more sustainable future. You see it as a challenge to engage in the tension between what is possible and what is achievable. You would like to learn to use your social and communication skills to build bridges between businesses, governments, consumers and science.
