The main structure of the Master's program is shown in the following table. The structure of the master’s program is identical for both specializations. The core program is compulsory for all students within the specialization.
| | |
| --- | --- |
| Core Program (specialization specific) | 20 EC |
| Specialization Elective Program | 20 EC |
| Free Elective Program | 15 EC |
| Internship | 20 EC |
| Graduation Project | 45 EC |
TU/e Master Chemical Engineering
## Elective courses
In consultation with your mentor, you will choose a specialization elective program as well as a free elective program, with subjects that link up with your own specific knowledge and interests. The specialization elective program is linked up with the research field you will work on during your graduation project. For the composition of the free elective program there are no restrictions other than that there should be no overlap with the study components within the Master’s program. Deepen your knowledge in areas such as sustainable chemical processes, polymers, catalysis, or delve into advanced materials science, supported by the faculty’s strong expertise in organic chemistry. Besides you can choose courses from other departments or even from other universities to add to this set of electives.
## Expert mentorship
With expert mentorship, from a professor or assistant/associate professor within one of the research groups chosen by you, you’ll build your personal study program and career trajectory, allowing you to thrive in a complex, ever-evolving field. [Click here to read more](https://educationguide.tue.nl/programs/graduate-school/masters-programs/chemical-engineering/mentoring) about the mentoring.
## International Experience
The second year offers unique opportunities to gain international experience, through an industrial internship, an international researchproject. You’ll learn to bridge the gap between theory and practice by working directly with companies or in research groups, gaining insight into global career paths.
## Industrial internship
The industrial internship of 3 months (20 ECTS) will offer you the opportunity to apply your knowledge in a real-world setting and gain valuable insights into the daily work of a chemical engineer. The faculty supports every student in finding a suitable internship, offering a wide range of opportunities at companies and research institutions.
Approximately 35% of students choose to stay in the Brainport region, an international hub for high-tech and chemical innovation. Additionally, 10% opt for an international experience with an internship abroad, while 55% secure internships in other regions of the Netherlands. Notably, 45% of students complete their internships at multinational companies, gaining valuable experience in a complex, international work environment.
Thanks to the faculty’s strong connections with leading companies and multinationals in the chemical industry, there are numerous opportunities available. Moreover, the faculty encourages students to push their boundaries, both geographically and professionally. This makes the internship not only an enriching experience but also a critical step towards a successful career.
## Graduation project
During your graduation project, which lasts eight months, you will further develop the expertise and skills you have developed during the Master's program. You will demonstrate your ability to carry out a research project independently. This project will be carried out in one of the research laboratories at the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry. The topic of the graduation project will lie within the field of research of the section concerned under supervision of the responsible professor.
