## TAMING THE ELECTRON SPIN IN NANODEVICES

Our research aims at the exploration and exploitation of physical phenomena at the nanometer scale by manipulating the spin-dependent and magnetic properties and structure. Focus is on novel concepts that are of potential relevance for future nanoelectronics. Research themes include ultra-high capacity, ultra-fast and energy-efficient solutions for future memory and logic, integrated nanophotonics, magnetic sensors for automotive, high-tech engineered nanosystems, and magnetic nanoparticles for the health domain.

## Work with us!

Please check out the [TU/e Vacancies page](https://jobs.tue.nl/en/vacancies.html#filter=p_type%3DSEARCH_RESULTS%26p_search%3D%26p_category_code_arr%3D6048-461674&page=1) for further opportunities within our group.

Even if no explicit vacancies are available, excellent candidates are stimulated sending an application letter with CV. We are particularly interested in highly talented students who (nearly) completed their Master of Science in Experimental/Applied Physics and outstanding PostDoc candidates with a (nearly or recently) finished PhD with top-performance in spintronics, ultrafast magnetization dynamics and/or nanomagnetism. Please contact any of the scientific staff members or secretary Karin Jansen, [c.a.m.jansen@tue.nl](#) for further information.

## Valorization

Although curiosity driven, our research is generically inspired by potential future applications. We strive to contribute to major societal and economic themes ranging from Green ICT to smart mobility, and from materials for society to high-tech systems. In all our approaches nanotechnology is key in providing novel solutions, by engineering materials and devices at the nanometer scale. Our research is well positioned on the Dutch and European research agendas. It is well aligned with the Dutch top sector*high-tech systems*, but also has links to *energy* and *life sciences and health*. Several questions starring prominently on the *National Research Agenda*, launched early 2016, are actively addressed by our researchers, such as: [How can we exploit quantum physics in enabling spectacular, novel applications](https://vragen.wetenschapsagenda.nl/cluster/welke-rol-speelt-de-kwantumfysica-in-macroscopische-systemen-en-welke-spectaculaire-nieuwe)? [Can we design smart materials with advanced properties](https://vragen.wetenschapsagenda.nl/cluster/kunnen-we-slimme-materialen-en-constructies-ontwerpen-met-nieuwe-geavanceerde-eigenschappen)?  And, [what will be the impact of the quantum internet](https://vragen.wetenschapsagenda.nl/cluster/wat-gaan-de-kwantum%C2%ADcomputer-en-het-kwantum%C2%ADinternet-voor-ons-betekenen)? – many of them grouped in the overarching routes 'Quantum/nano revolution' and 'Materials - made in Holland'

## Facilities

The [NanoLabTUe](https://www.tue.nl/en/research/research-labs/nanolabtue) offers a unique combination of equipment for developing optical chips and other applications based on compound semiconductor technology.

[NanoAccess](https://www.tue.nl/en/research/research-labs/nanoaccess) makes it possible to produce, process and analyze innovative materials with nanometer accuracy, without releasing the necessary vacuum.

For a quick measurement of the magnetic behavior of magnetic thin film structures there is a home build MOKE setup available in the [Magneto-Optics & Femtosecond Laser Lab](https://www.tue.nl/en/research/research-groups/physics-of-nanostructures/magneto-optics-femtosecond-laser-laboratory).

Research within FNA is aimed at the engineering and investigation of functional nanostructures. Emphasis is on structures and devices with application potential in the field of spintronics, (magnetic) data storage, and sensors. A state-of-the-art infrastructure for preparation and manipulation, as well as in-situ and ex-situ characterization of nanostructures, is available.
