RESEARCH PROFILE

I am a professor of Freight Transport and Logistics at the Eindhoven  University of Technology in the Netherlands. I develop models for transport, logistics, and mobility problems using operations research techniques. I established a strong academic foundation in supply chains, transportation, logistics, and mobility.

My research focuses on freight transport and logistics, where I have made significant contributions throughout my career. I authored over 165 papers in academic journals, including Management Science, Transportation Science, and Transportation Research Part B. More information on all my publications can also be found on Google Scholar (with a current h-index of 66 and over 15,300 citations to my work).

In my research, I collaborate with approximately 15 Ph.D. students and various colleagues worldwide. I utilize operations research models and techniques, such as integer programming, branch-and-price, and metaheuristics, to address challenges in transport and logistics. Additionally, I apply artificial intelligence methodologies, including reinforcement learning and other machine learning approaches, to solve complex problems in the field.

Smart Logistics in action: Companies are our key laboratory for doing research in supply chains, logistics and operations.

ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

Tom Van Woensel holds a BSc and MSc degree in Applied Economic Sciences (Major Econometrics) from the University of Antwerp, Belgium. He obtained his doctoral degree from the same university, earning a PhD in the field of using queueing theoretical approaches for traffic flow networks.

Tom Van Woensel has published over 165 papers in leading journals (including Management Science, Transportation Science, Transportation Research Part B, C, D, E, Production and Operations Management, Interfaces, Computers and Operations Research, European Journal of Operational Research) and several book chapters. Van Woensel is also associate editor for Transportation Science, OR Spectrum, Urban Science, and Logistics Research. He is a frequent speaker at academic and professional conferences in the Netherlands and abroad.

Tom van Woensel also serves as Academic Director of the Executive Master in Operations and Supply Chain Management at TIAS in the Netherlands. As a collaborating member, he is also connected to the CIRRELT (Centre interuniversitaire de recherche sur les réseaux d'entreprise, la logistique et le transport) in Montreal, Canada. He is also the director of the European Supply Chain Forum, which involves over 75 multinational companies.
