How do you ensure that office workers move more often during their work? How do you design an interactive system that makes patients less stressed during an MRI scan? How do mobile phones that you can repair look like? Can you develop a tool that stimulates discussion about the influence of social media on the mental well-being of young people? How do you make people aware of the energy consumption of generative AI? How do you help people with dementia find their way back home? \
 \
 You can make a difference in the world with your creative, technical solutions. If you choose the master's in Industrial Design, you will be trained to realize real change. You look beyond the traditional boundaries of form and function and integrate new, innovative technologies, data, user experience and interaction into your design. You can choose to translate new technologies into meaningful products and systems for everyday use or focus on designing social innovations, aimed at tackling large-scale, social issues. You can also delve into research into design methods, materials, interactions, etc. You can work closely with researchers and gain access to state-of-the-art research labs.

What kind of designer do you want to become? Will you be a researcher, a designer for healthcare systems, a food innovator, or will you design for or with AI? Or do you want to make an impact in a completely different field? During the two-year master’s program, you can develop in the design direction you choose. There are only two mandatory courses; you design the rest of your study program yourself based on your vision, interests, and ambitions.

### WHO ARE YOU?

Are you interested in technical applications, are you creative, and can you empathize with people? Would you like to be the spider in the web that brings together new technologies, entrepreneurship, data, aesthetics, and user experiences into a meaningful product, system, or service? Are you entrepreneurial, self-motivated, and a good team player? And do you want to be in control of your own studies and develop into a designer with a unique profile? Then this master's program is for you!

Our Master graduate student Noa Smolenaars won the audience award 2025 for her graduation project. For the Catharina hospital in Eindhoven she redesigned a care pathway for women with heart failure. She explains it in a youtube movie (link to the right).

## Why Industrial Design at TU/e?

- A **unique educational model**: Competence-oriented and self-directed. We assess you on how you develop and use your competencies en ask you to reflect on your work.
- As a master's student you can work in a **great number of make and research labs**, related to: (bio)materials, food, rapid prototyping, wood working, health, data, electronics, 3D printers, wearables, etc.
- You have the **freedom to put together your own study program** and develop yourself to the designer you want to be: there are only two compulsory courses
- We encourage you to develop your **own vision as a designer.** Professors, coaches, fellow students and the study association Lucid help you in this trajectory
- We train your **professional skills** that prepare you for your future career.
- Intensive, individual coaching. From the second semester of year 1, your mentor will continue to coach you -> you have your own mentor for 3 semesters
- A **close-knit community,** small-scale education in an informal setting. You can work closely together with researchers, professors and fellow students.
- **Study association Lucid**: an active association that not only organizes social events, but also workshops, career and networking events
- Located in the heart of **Brainport**: the smartest region in Europe. High-tech companies and innovative start-ups are just around the corner and offer opportunities for internships and collaborations.
- **Eindhoven breathes design**: think of the Dutch Design Week, the Design academy and all the design-oriented start-ups. Many students participate in events like [Dutch Design Week](http://www.ddw.nl/) or [Glow.](https://gloweindhoven.nl/)
- Focus on **interactive systems**, products and services
- **Social context:**Design projects are done in a so-called 'squad', a group in which you work together with fellow students, academic staff, experts from the field, companies and organisations on a particular (social) theme or application domain.

## Support during your study

As a student, you do not have to do everything by yourself. During your studies, there are several people you can turn to with your questions. Your teacher, mentor, a fellow student or your study advisor, to name a few. At Industrial Design you can find them all in the [online study guide](https://educationguide.tue.nl/programs/graduate-school/masters-programs/industrial-design/coaching).
