Data nowadays is omnipresent in every aspect of life. We leave data traces as a result of our many everyday activities including traveling – smart card data, mobile phone data and social media data, to name but a few. Reflecting the collective impact of human behavior, real-time urban data such as emission, traffic and noise areis readily available in many parts of the world. It is however a waste of resources to keep expanding the scale of this data without a clear understanding of the benefits the data offers, and the way in which it can be implemented to plan and manage our cities more effectively. That is why we need to train a new generation of data scientists in the drive towards a more sustainable future. Key characteristics in the years and decades ahead will be a healthy, low-carbon society, clean environment and efficient use of resources. If urban mobility and innovation are important and appealing to you, then the Smart Mobility Data Science and Analytics (SMDSA) master program at the Technical University of Eindhoven may well be what you are looking for.

SMDSA: what’s the program all about?\ Students learn how to manage large mobility datasets, critically understand their quality, and utilize the findings of these datasets to address our cities’ most pressing challenges. You will gain analytical skills to extract patterns from Big Mobility Data and learn advanced statistical methods to build forecasting models that can be used for planning purposes. The program is designed in interdisciplinary fashion with a focus on mobility services for citizens, goods and logistics. Moreover, the track trains students to be the entrepreneurs of the future by containing 30 European Credit Transfer and Accumulation Systems (ECTs) worth of innovation and entrepreneurship courses in the curriculum. This is one of the features distinguishing the SMDSA track from many other transport-related master studies.

SMDSA: what’s in it for me?\ This track includes learning various analytical methods suited to a wide range of data types, as well as understanding how to interpret analysis results to develop policies and management plans. You will acquire essential technical skills and training in entrepreneurship & innovation, practical experience in the industry, and a strong network throughout the EU, unlocking opportunities for your career in the world of Big Mobility Data.

Why would the program be a good fit for me, and what skills do I need?\ The SMDSA program integrates entrepreneurship and innovation throughout the coursework and welcomes students with a solid foundation in analytical problem-solving and an eye for detail. This is most clearly demonstrated by a bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Systems or a related field.

Why should I follow this program at the TU/e and not elsewhere; what makes it unique?\ The SMDSA track has a unique study path, incorporating a double degree and EIT Label Certificate program. You will spend one year each at two different universities, the “entry” university and the “exit” university. You can choose from five leading universities in Europe in the field of urban mobility:

Graduating students will be awarded two officially-recognized master’s degrees, one from each university where they carried out their studies. The students will also receive EIT label certificate upon their graduation.

Another unique feature of this track is providing dedicated training for students to become the entrepreneurs of the future. Students will also enjoy the benefits of a Summer School held in two European cities between Year 1 and Year 2, during which they will work on real-life challenges in European cities.

EIT Urban Mobility offers a number of merit-based scholarships, for which there is no need to apply. To check the citeria on which students are ranked, visit the detailed information page on EIT Urban Mobility Master School’s website.

The ABP mastertrack Smart Mobility Data Science and Analytics (SMDA) , starting in september 2021, is part of theEIT Urban Mobility Master School, which trains students to extract meaningful insight from ever-increasing urban mobility data.

Study objectives\ Smart Mobility Data Science and Analytics (SMDSA) is a master track where students learn how to manage large mobility datasets, critically understand their quality, and utilize them to address our cities most pressing challenges. You will gain analytical skills to extract hidden patterns of big mobility data and learn advanced statistical methods to build forecasting models which will be used as planning tools. You will apply the knowledge you gain in projects during which you will work on real mobility challenges.

Eligibility\ The programme welcomes candidates who have a solid foundation in analytical problem solving with an eye to details, as demonstrated by a bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Systems or a related field.

Please note that both universities (entry and exit) assess whether you are admissible to the SMDA track.
