## RESEARCH PROFILE

Henk Swagten is a full-time professor within the group Physics of Nanostructures (FNA) at the Applied Physics department of Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e).  His areas of expertise include materials technology, nanotechnology atomic physics and molecular physics. Henk Swagten investigates the emerging field of layered magnetic structures and spin-based electronics, in short 'spintronics'. The study of new magnetic and electrical phenomena, often in close relation to the industrial application in electronic 'devices', is central to his research.  With a VICI grant from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) Henk has set out research lines in the area of spin transport in semiconductors, new materials for magneto resistance, scanning tunneling microscopy for magnetic surfaces and nanostructuring of spin-based electronics.

## ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

Henk Swagten obtained his PhD with honors in the group Cooperative Phenomena group of the Faculty of Applied Physics at TU/e. For his doctoral research (1987-1990), and as a fellow of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), he has carried out experimental research into ordering phenomena and interactions in magnetic semiconducting materials. For this purpose, he worked at the University of Notre Dame in 1991.  In addition to his position at TU/e, Henk is Editor in Chief of NTVN (Nederlands Tijschrift voor Natuurkunde), a publication of the Netherlands Physics Society.
