Design is everywhere. Whether it's operating your smartphone, remotely monitoring the progress of your physical therapy, controlling a self-driving car, involving citizens in policy in their neighbourhood, or your new, sustainable sneakers; somebody thought about the design. As an industrial designer, you translate societal trends and technologies into practical applications for everyday life.
The designer is the spider in the web when translating new technology into applications. During your studies, you will learn how to integrate innovations, data, creativity, technology, user needs, aesthetics, social impact and business interest into the design of a product or service. But most of all, you develop the right skills and mindset to tackle a design challenge, whether it concerns a service, product, or system. After graduation, you will receive your degree Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design.
WHAT'S IN THE PROGRAM?
You will learn to design interactive systems, products and services that make our lives better, more social or simply more comfortable. Examples of projects that you could be working on are smart home systems, intelligent clothing, sustainable materials, AI, health, and motivating games. You will do this not only by taking courses, but also by lots of hands-on education: learning by doing.
Creative and versatile
The bachelor's program of Industrial Design is a creative and versatile degree program. It is a mix of creativity and technology, of thinking and doing. The disciplines, or 'areas of expertise', that you will study are:
- Business and Entrepreneurship (learning how to bring your product to the market)
- Creativity and Aesthetics (for a functional and well-designed product or service)
- Math, Data and Computing (for obtaining and interpreting the right data for research)
- Technology and Realization (bringing your design to live using technology)
- User and Society (getting to know the user's perspective, and responding to societal trends and challenges).
This is how you develop the knowledge and skills you need to design interactive systems, products and services.\ \ In design projects you will discover how these disciplines are interrelated. You will also learn which discipline suits you best and where you want to develop from the second year onwards. In the third year, you will learn how to combine the different areas of expertise.

Why Industrial Design in Eindhoven?
- Located in the heart of Brainport: the smartest region in Europe. High-tech companies and innovative start-ups are just around the corner and offer opportunities for internships and collaborations.
- Eindhoven breathes design: think of the Dutch Design Week, the Design academy and all the design-oriented start-ups. Many students participate in events like Dutch Design Week (see YouTube movie) or GLOW.
- A unique educational model: Competence-oriented and self-directed. We assess you on how you develop and use your competencies. In design projects, you will use, integrate and develop knowledge and skills from the five areas of expertise, and learn about design and research processes.
- We teach you the professional skills throughout your bachelor's and master's program that will prepare you for the job market.
- You are responsible for your own development and partly determine your own program. From the first year onwards, you have free electives. Do you want to go into depth and are you taking all your electives at Industrial Design? Or do you opt for broadening your horizons and take electives from other programmes? We encourage you to develop your own vision and professional identity as a designer. This not only offers you a lot of freedom of choice, but also requires a lot of responsibility and initiative from you. Teachers, company coaches, fellow students, and the study association Lucid will help you with this.
- Learning by doing: From the first semester onwards, you will work on a group CBL project in which you immediately apply what you learn.
- Focus on interactive systems, products and services
- Social context:Design projects are done in a so-called 'squad', a group in which you work together with fellow students, academic staff, experts from the field, companies and organisations on a particular (social) theme or application domain.
- TU/e organizes its undergraduate education in the Bachelor College. This not only means all TU/e bachelors follow a similar structure, but also that you can easily take electives at other departments.
- Excellent students are challenged to participate in the TU/e’s Honors Academy.
- Student teams: As a TU/e student, you have the unique opportunity to join one of our dynamic, multidisciplinary student teams alongside your studies.
