The QST track focuses on the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics, quantum computing, quantum materials, and quantum information, as well as the mathematical structures underlying these phenomena. Students explore foundational concepts such as superposition and entanglement, learning how they enable capabilities beyond classical systems in areas like quantum computation, communication, and sensing.

The program bridges theory and application, training students to model, analyze, and innovate within quantum systems and to connect quantum theory to real-world platforms, including quantum processors, sensors, and communication devices. Graduates acquire the skills to push the boundaries of quantum science and contribute to the quantum technology industry, with the opportunity to specialize in theory, experiment, or both.

Topics include optical and quantum-secure communication, post-quantum cryptography, integrated photonics, neutral atom computing and sensing devices, quantum information theory and algorithms, design and characterization of quantum hardware, and the foundations of quantum physics and quantum materials.

## Highlights of the program

Unlike tracks that are primarily focused on engineering or algorithms, the QST track at TU/e offers a deeply integrative approach that spans physics, mathematics, and technology. It’s where Hilbert space meets hardware, enabling students to not only understand how quantum systems work but also why, as well as how to improve or control them from first principles.

At TU/e, we develop quantum technologies that create possibilities beyond classical counterparts in computation, communication, and sensing while also advancing quantum materials and exploring fundamental quantum physics. Research within the track combines applied and theoretical work in quantum physics and information, coding theory, and quantum cryptography with experimental breakthroughs in quantum materials, sensing, and photonic devices, culminating in the development of full-stack scalable quantum computers based on neutral Rydberg atoms.

Courses are shared and given jointly by the Departments of Mathematics & Computer Science, Applied Physics, and Electrical Engineering.

Students also contribute directly to ongoing quantum research at TU/e, engaging with active research groups in areas such as quantum computing and simulation, quantum control, and photonics (possibly more).

## Who are you?

The ideal student for the Quantum Science and Technology track is passionate about exploring how abstract mathematics drives real technological breakthroughs and is curious about the future of computation, sensing, and security. They are motivated to turn quantum principles into transformative technologies and aspire to careers as quantum algorithm or system developers, researchers in applied physics or mathematics, innovators in start-ups or national labs, or specialists in semiconductor and nanofabrication industries. With strong analytical skills, an eagerness to work across disciplines, and resilience in the face of complexity, they thrive as independent yet collaborative thinkers. What excites them most is the chance to explore the strange logic of entanglement, build systems that harness quantum coherence, and contribute to the early stages of a technological revolution.

## Why TU/e?

Studying Quantum Science and Technology at TU/e places you at the intersection of physics, mathematics, and engineering, with access to world-class facilities like a neutral-atom hybrid quantum computer, advanced fabrication labs, and cryogenics. Embedded in Brainport Eindhoven, one of Europe’s top high-tech hubs, TU/e connects you directly to start-ups, industry, and national initiatives like Quantum Delta NL. Through the Quantum Talent & Learning Centre Eindhoven (QTLC-E) and strong research collaborations, students gain hands-on experience, industry links, and a solid foundation for a career in quantum technology.

## Admission and Enrollment

You can apply for this track via either the Master of Industrial Applied Mathematics or the Master of Applied Physics, depending on the profile you want to follow.

To enroll, strong analytical and abstraction skills are required. With a BA degree in Mathematics or Physics, you are directly admissible. In other cases, the admissions committee determines whether your (academic) experience and motivation suffice.
