Outreach provides our Dental Surgery and Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy students with the opportunity to gain practical learning experiences in primary care within a community.
Off
Sheffield’s outreach placements were established in 2006. Together with small and large group teaching, our outreach placements focus on helping you to learn about patient-centred care and the importance of primary care in providing treatment for patients in varied social circumstances.
Our placements are carefully selected; most are in general dental practice, but some are in urgent care and community dental clinics. Currently, clinical placements are offered in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, and the surrounding area.
The aims of outreach are to:
- encourage you to appreciate the ethical responsibility of dental professionals for the oral health of the whole community
- increase your understanding of the principles and particularly the practice of public health dentistry
- develop your appreciation of the responsibilities and requirements of the practice environment
- consolidate your awareness and develop your skills in the provision of comprehensive care for a range of patient groups.
A high-quality outreach experience
Our placements are thoroughly quality assured, and published evidence shows that they enhance students’ ability to plan care for patients and increase student confidence and clinical experience significantly. In addition, students consistently evaluate outreach - and the support they receive - very positively. We have also hosted fact-finding visits from overseas universities and other UK dental schools.
Our placements help students transition into Dental Foundation Training and other forms of employment following graduation.
