### Changes in the SNSF project funding
The SNSF has announced significant changes to project funding due to increasing number of submissions and expected cuts of funds provided by the federal governement. In order to be able to award at least one grant to a larger number of outstanding researchers, the SNSF will limit both the number of proposals per researcher and the requested funding amount per proposal.

### UZH launches the Willener Fellowships (MSCA Seal of Excellence Program)
Thanks to a generous donation, the UZH is able to implement the Willener funding program for talented postdoctoral researchers who applied for an MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship (MSCA-PF) with UZH as host institution but – despite high evaluation scores – were not funded due to budgetary constraints. Those recipients of a so-called Seal of Excellence (SoE) will be automatically considered for one of the three Willener Fellowships, which the UZH awards for the first time in 2026. SoE recipients in the latest MSCA-PF call who were not already in touch with the Research & Grants Office may submit their application by 15 February.

### SNSF implements budget cuts as of 2026
The Swiss government proposes national budget cuts to research and innovation in the years 2027 to 2029 as part of a larger spending relief package, which is currently discussed in the Swiss parliament. In anticipation of these cuts, the SNSF has announced to reduce costs already in 2026 by pausing several funding instruments and lowering approval rates of the project and career funding schemes. These measures are intended to mitigate the impact of the expected budget cuts as of 2027. Beside the SNSF, also Innosuisse and the university sector are facing budget cuts in the relief package.

Through funding from the UZH Candoc and Postdoc Grants, the University of Zurich supports its early career researchers. In the 2024 call period, 415 applications (225 candoc, 190 postdoc) were submitted, of which the Research Committee approved a total of 123 - 72 candoc and 51 postdoc projects. This results in a funding rate of 32.0% for the Candoc area and 26.8% for the Postdoc area.

### SRF "Puls": Miracle weapon nanoantibodies
At the Nanobody Service Facility, a technology platform of the University of Zurich, scientists are using nine alpacas to produce nanoantibodies with very special properties. Thanks to their small size and strong binding capacity, they are a precision weapon in the fight against infectious and autoimmune diseases, in cancer therapy and in the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. ### Research Animals days 2023 at UZH
Time and again, the media report on the successes of biomedical research at the University of Zurich. Many of these successes are based on animal experiments, which is why it is important to UZH to communicate transparently about the topic of animal experiments and to engage in discourse with the public. Thus, UZH is one of the founding members and currently the lead institution of STAAR (Swiss Transparency Agreement on Animal Research).
