A guide to using the scholarship search tool

The scholarship search tool helps you search for available scholarships at UTS. Results will include a description and provide details on value, duration, eligibility, selection process, conditions of award and how to apply.

Filtering your search

You can easily filter your search according to the course area you’re interested in (for example, Business, Science, Law, Arts) and/or eligibility criteria (such as academic merit or financial hardship).\ Click “Search Scholarships” without selecting any search criteria for a comprehensive list of all scholarships at UTS. You can then narrow your search by using a keyword.

Key terms

An understanding of some of the key terms used in the scholarship search tool can help you to refine your search.

Current Students are students currently studying at UTS.

Future students are students who have yet to commence studying at UTS.

Academic excellence or merit-basedscholarships may be awarded based on high school, TAFE or university results.

Equity scholarships are designed to provide financial support either via cash payments or tuition fee payments to students who are facing barriers to their study or have specific attributes. Students would demonstrate evidence of these barriers or attributes by submitting a UAC Equity Scholarship application.

• What are the educational barriers or attributes supported by UTS equity scholarships?

• Financial challenges/hardship.

The easiest way to demonstrate you’re facing financial challenges is to be receiving a Centrelink or other Commonwealth means-tested support payment. This includes Youth Allowance, Austudy and Abstudy and other support payments such as a Disability Support Pension, Parent Payment (single) or Carer Payment.

You can also demonstrate to UAC exceptional financial hardship beyond your control or choosing, but if you or your family is above the Centrelink eligibility threshold you would not meet this criteria.

UTS does not consider students who have parents/guardians in receipt of Family Tax Benefit Part A for equity scholarship purposes.

• Carer responsibilities - you care for a person with ongoing support needs due to a chronic medical condition, illness, disability or need for palliative care.
• Living in a regional or remote area of Australia - you live or have lived in the past two years in a regional or remote area of Australia for at least one (1) year. You can demonstrate this with official documents that show your residential address (for example, bank statements, evidence of school attendance, bills). UAC uses the Australian Standard Geographic Classification Remoteness Areas (ASGC-RA) system map. You can access it at doctorconnect.gov.au (navigate to the 'Health Workforce Locator' and enter your address). All categories other than ‘RA1 – Major Cities of Australia’ are considered regional or remote.
• Sole parent responsibilities - you are single and have at least one dependent child under 18 who is at least primarily in your care and living in Australia. If you are a receiving a Parenting Payment (single) or can provide an independent statement confirming your circumstances from a responsible person such as higher education educator, doctor, lawyer or medical professional.
• Medical disadvantage – you have a chronic medical condition/disability or ongoing effects of abuse. You would need to provide medical and educational impact statements to demonstrate how your ability to study is or will be affected.
• UTS Accessibility can help students registered with their service to provide an educational impact statement; a medical impact statement must be completed by a registered health professional treating you for your condition.
• Indigenous Australian – if you're an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander student, many scholarship opportunities are available. To access these scholarships (and Jumbunna services for students) UTS students must supply a Confirmation of Aboriginality or submit a Jumbunna statutory declaration.
• Refugee/Asylum Seeker - if you’re a permanent humanitarian resident or the holder of an asylum seeker bridging visa or temporary protection visa, you could apply for the UTS Humanitarian Scholarship.

• How to I demonstrate financial need for an equity-based scholarships?

Financial need for an equity-based-scholarship is demonstrated through:

• Receipt of a Centrelink means-tested income support payment (such as Youth Allowance, Austudy, ABSTUDY) or
• Exceptional financial hardship with supporting evidence
• (Note: when applying through UAC for UTS Equity Scholarships, Family Tax Benefit will not be considered as demonstrative of financial hardship).
