Recognition of prior learning (RPL) for UTS Health courses

Your previous studies could count towards your Health degree at UTS. Find out if you qualify for recognition of prior learning (RPL).

Key information

Undergraduate RPL

Postgraduate RPL

You may receive RPL if you have successfully completed similar subjects in recent postgraduate studies. These subjects may count as elective credits or specific subjects if they match 80% of the content of the subject you want credit for.

You can get up to 8 subject exemptions (48 credit points) for a Faculty of Health masters degree (excluding Graduate School of Health courses).

RPL will be approved under pre-determined credentialing arrangements or for study completed in specific postgraduate nursing courses.

Are there time limits for RPL?

RPL is generally only granted for study completed within 5 years of the session for which RPL is sought.

When should I apply?

All applications for undergraduate and postgraduate Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) can be made at the time of course enrolment, or prior to subject enrolment.

For subjects in UTS Online courses (OPM), applications must be submitted five days prior to the commencement of the subject.

For subjects in other UTS courses, applications must be received prior to census date of the relevant session.

Outcomes of RPL applications will then be conveyed to the student on or shortly after enrolment.

You cannot apply for RPL under any circumstances after final re-enrolment (i.e. in the final session of your study).

How to apply

Step 1
Decide what type of credit you are applying for

Use the RPL Tool to find arrangements that may apply to your previous study. If your institution or course is not listed, you may still be eligible to apply for RPL.

Step 2
Consult the Faculty Handbook

The online Handbook provides detailed descriptions of the subjects including learning outcomes, learning and teaching activities and requisites. Before an application is submitted a comparison must be made to ensure there is a match between the completed units of study and subjects offered within the UTS course.

If necessary, contact the relevant Course Director to discuss your case and to obtain any details that are not available from the Faculty handbook.

Step 3
Complete the UTS application for RPL form

The Application form can be found on the recognition of prior learning page.

Further information and support with submitting RPL applications can be obtained through the UTS Student Centre 1300 ASK UTS (1300 275 887) +61 2 9514 1222 (outside Australia).

International Students seeking RPL should submit an application when applying for admission to a UTS course. Please contact UTS International for further information.

Step 4
Complete a comparison table to for subjects previously completed

This is an example of how to create a match between the completed units of study and the UTS subject for which RPL is being sought. For the application to be approved there must be a clear match on 80% of the details.

The UTS subject name and number for which you are seeking RPL University, subject name and number from the previous study
List of subject objectives List of matching objectives not necessarily in the same order as the subject you have taken
Subject content Match the relevant subject content
Assessment Match your Assessment items and show how they are similar
