What you’ll study

You'll commence your Law studies with a range of core subjects, building your familiarity with topics like remedies, evidence and Constitutional law. Then, you'll have the opportunity to acquire forward-focused insights through the Legal Futures and Technology Major or study topics of particular interest through your choice of Options subjects.

Your Communications studies will see you establish a broad understanding of the discipline before specialising in your chosen stream. Here, you'll cover topics like self and society, political ideas and change and policy and advocacy before completing a professional placement.

Course highlights

This program is designed to give you practical and theoretical capabilities in policy, political science, sociology and law. You'll get the chance to complete hands-on research, internships and fieldwork in two discrete disciplines and graduate having completed the academic requirements for admission as a lawyer to the NSW Supreme Court.

Industry accreditation

This course satisfies the academic requirements for admission to the Supreme Court of NSW as a lawyer. Once completed, you will also need to complete a practical legal training program, such as the Graduate Certificate in Professional Legal Practice (available at UTS) to be eligible for admission as a lawyer.

This course is suitable if you are aiming to integrate social sciences with legal expertise, especially if you are interested in the relationship between law, society and politics. Choose this course to fulfil the academic requirements for admission to practise law in NSW while gaining a broad understanding of social and political dynamics.

You will acquire knowledge in sociology, political science, and international studies, alongside a comprehensive legal education. You’ll develop skills in social research, policy formulation, and legal analysis, with elective modules in history, communication, and specialist legal topics, including a major in Legal Futures and Technology.

Teaching methods include research projects, case study analysis and interactive learning experiences. Upon completion, you will be well-equipped for careers in law, social research, policy development, political consultancy or media.

By combining professional studies, hands-on research, internships and fieldwork in two discrete disciplines, this combined degree equips students to consider the role of the law as a tool for social and political change.

Elective choices include cross-discipline studies in history, communication, media and country studies; specialist legal subjects; and the Legal Futures and Technology major, which provides first-hand experience of the technologies shaping the future of the legal profession.

Graduates are ready to use their professional legal requirement to support activities in social research, policy development and political advocacy, or for roles in the social science, media and communication sectors. - ### Important dates

If you find yourself rapt by the world of innovation – you can pair your core degree with a Diploma in Innovation, graduating with two qualifications in the same timeframe.

In both instances, you’ll work on a real-world challenge presented by an industry partner organisation – partners who often create career pathways for our graduates.

The course is offered on a five-year, full-time basis. Students are required to attend approximately 17 hours of seminars and lectures a week, and may be required to attend evening classes for the law component. - ### Admission requirements

Applicants must have completed an Australian Year 12 qualification, Australian Qualifications Framework Diploma, or equivalent Australian or overseas qualification at the required level.

Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.

2026 Indicative tuition fees for government-supported domestic students

All offers for domestic undergraduate students are for Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP).This means the Australian Government contributes to your education costs, and you pay the remaining tuition fees, known as the student contribution. If eligible, you can defer payment through HECS-HELP, or you can choose to pay your fees upfront each session.
