What you’ll study
This degree will give you a practically-focused education, equipping you with the capabilities you need for a successful future in fashion design. You'll learn to design, illustrate and construct garments, design and create fabrics and other textiles, and benefit from a range of hands-on experiences.

First year
You’ll begin by undertaking foundational subjects in your core disciplinary streams and design studies. You'll learn about important cultural and historical perspectives in fashion, discover the elements that make up fashion design research and development and build practical skills in Visual Illustration and Technical Sketching, Digital Fashion Design Programs, Flat Patternmaking and Garment Construction. 2. #### Second year
You'll continue your education this year with practical education in Illustration, Experimental Textile Construction and Digital and Screen Printing. You'll also establish vital practical skills in Drape-Led Design techniques, Knit and Stretch Garment Design and Construction, as well as the opportunity to develop an international outlook for fashion design and manufacture through our Global Studio elective offering. 3. #### Third year
In your final year, you'll activate your learned design skills in advanced studio subjects, across Textiles Design, and Garment Design and Technical Construction alongside professional practice subjects preparing you with industry relevant skills. Elective units, including a Transdisciplinary elective, allow you to shape your own learning and enhance your collaborative skills.

Course highlights
Within this course, you'll undertake a number of core disciplinary units, which we teach you vital capabilities such as Textile Design and Construction, Flat Patternmaking and Drape Design skills, foundations in Fashion Design Technologies and Visualisation skills. There will be opportunities to enhance your knowledge with your design studies and elective units, spanning topics from Dye Methods to Machine Knitting.

0:01\ Movement has always inspired me, I've always been creative and I had a dream to build a career.
\ 0:10\ I'd actually love something that would let me live after pulling that.
\ 0:19\ Before I started my Bachelor of Design in Fashion and Textiles at UTSI.
\ 0:24\ Didn't even know how to sew.
\ 0:26\ The first year was a huge lining curve, but learning those core design foundations was so rewarding and looking back, I can see how those early skills shaped everything I'm doing now.
\ 0:37\ From day one, the lecturers and tutors were like mentors.
\ 0:40\ They didn't just teach us technical skills like pattern making and construction, they taught us how to look at design differently.
\ 0:47\ To reimagine my friends and the people I met here made a huge difference too.
\ 0:55\ We supported each other through late nights in the studio and encouraged each other to keep going.
\ 1:00\ They helped me grow as a designer.
\ 1:03\ UTS really listens.
\ 1:04\ When my class showed a strong interest in knitting, they responded by getting us more knitting machines.
\ 1:10\ We also have access to tools like WGSN and Clothes 3D as a part of our learning industry.
\ 1:16\ Partners came in to show us how they use this technology, and it just clicked.
\ 1:20\ UTS is preparing us for what's next.
\ 1:24\ I've started interning at an Australian fashion label and walking into that studio I felt ready.
\ 1:30\ I'm still figuring out if I want to start my own label or work in house, but whatever I choose I know I can do it.

Where you’ll study

The fashion studio is your dedicated space for working over a range of specialist areas such as couture, ready-to-wear, swimwear and sportswear.
The textiles workshop is a spacious, well-equipped space where you can try different processes.
The knit lab is a newly expanded area where students are introduced to machine knitting. It includes flatbed knitting machines equipped with a range of accessories, as well as Tanaka dry-felting machines.
The photomedia studio is equipped with everything you need for professional-grade photography, including lighting studios, green screens and darkrooms for traditional black and white photographic printing.
