What you’ll study
This is a postgraduate degree and is only offered part-time over one year. You must have completed a relevant Bachelor's degree or higher or demonstrate equivalent experience to enrol. \ \ Within this program, you'll complete four comprehensive subjects to build a well-rounded practical understanding of the modern writing, editing and publishing landscape. You'll study highly relevant areas, such as publishing methods, creative practices and practical editing to give you a comprehensive toolkit of skills that will help you succeed in a range of relevant careers.

This course is designed for those who wish to work in writing, editing, and publishing or for experienced creators who wish to enhance their existing knowledge. Distinguished by its four-decade legacy, the course boasts a track record of alumni excellence.

You will acquire a versatile skill set, developing the art of storytelling and the precision of editing, while honing analytical and collaborative strengths to stay agile in a shifting industry.
This course will equip you with the expertise to pursue roles such as publishing assistant, copyeditor, author, marketing assistant, content advisor, and more, across various creative and cultural sectors.
Students are taught by leading practitioners who are currently working in industry and who can offer guidance on how to work flexibly in a wide range of industry contexts.
Students develop a unique and adaptable understanding of writing, editing, publishing and creativity. They learn and simulate professional editing and publishing skills in tandem with authentic, practice-based skills such as narrative and fact-based writing as they build the analytical and collaborative capabilities that equip them to adapt to change. - ### Important dates

The course is offered on a one-year, part-time basis. - ### Admission requirements
To be eligible for admission to this course, applicants must meet the following criteria.
Applicants must have one of the following:
- Completed Australian bachelor's degree or higher qualification, or overseas equivalent, in any field of study
OR
- Professional or creative experience in the field, i.e. work in the professional writing, editing and publishing industries or adjacent fields such as songwriting and screenwriting, communications, content management or advertising AND A portfolio AND A general capacity to undertake tertiary education, demonstrated through post-secondary educational achievements which may include the satisfactory completion of non-award courses in writing, editing or publishing AND An interest in the course and demonstrated understanding of the opportunities present in Writing, Editing, and Publishing
Supporting documentation to be submitted with the application
For applicants who need to demonstrate work experience:
- Curriculum Vitae AND Statement of service in one of the following formats:
- A 'Statement of Service' provided by the employer
- A completed 'UTS statement of service’ signed by the employer
- A statutory declaration confirming work experience (for Australian Residents only)
- An official letter from the applicant’s accountant or solicitor on their company letterhead confirming the applicant’s work experience or engagement with the business, duration of operations, and the nature of the business
- A business certificate of registration in original language and English (e.g. provision of ASIC documentation or ABN or similar documentation for Australian Businesses)
For applicants who need to demonstrate interest in the course:
- Personal statement outlining knowledge of the course and careers, how experience and skills could be applied to the course, and understanding of the opportunities present in the emerging media industries.
Portfolio is submitted as a writing portfolio of no more than 3000 words or equivalent and may include evidence of professional recognition such as achieving publication or working voluntarily in editorial, publishing or creative environments (e.g., writers’ festivals or editorial collectives).
Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.

2026 Indicative tuition fees for government-supported domestic students
This course offers a limited number of Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP). This means the Australian Government contributes to your education costs, and you pay the remaining tuition fees, known as the student contribution. If eligible, you can defer payment through HECS-HELP, or you can choose to pay your fees upfront each session.
CSP applications are reviewed continuously by the university and offered based on merit, so we recommend applying early to be considered. Learn more about applying for a CSP, eligibility and key dates.

- Indicative Total tuition fee: $8,700.00
Tuition fees are reviewed annually, with any new rates effective from the beginning of each calendar year. The total indicative tuition fee includes estimated annual increases over the duration of the course.

Your tuition fees do not include:
- The Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF), which supports student services and activities. If eligible, you can defer this fee using SA-HELP.
- Textbooks, materials, and other course-related costs.
